Sophie (Piecuch) Pazdon

NEWMARKET - Sophie (Piecuch) Pazdon, 90, of Bay Road, passed to the next phase of life on January 26, 2015 at Exeter Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.

Born March 20, 1924, in Durham on Dame Road, she was the fifth child of eleven children of John and Helen (Skwiersz) Piecuch. She was a 1943 graduate of Newmarket High School.

She joined the Women's Army Air Corp in July of 1944 and was assigned to the motor pool in Dowfield, Maine. She volunteered for oversees duty in Bermuda where she stayed until the war ended.

Sophie worked at MacAllens for many years starting as a keypunch operator and later became the supervisor of the computer room. She retired in 1979 to enjoy her family and her hobbies. She was a member and treasurer of the Newmarket Senior Citizens group.

Sophie always made her family feel very special by being involved in every event or occasion of their lives. She was always happy to entertain and loved to cook Polish food for her guests. Sophie always looked forward to the Saturday night ritual of playing cards with her sisters and sisters in law. She enjoyed going shopping, out to eat, and traveling with her husband John. She was vibrant and active well into her 80s riding her bike, cross-country skiing, swimming in her pool, and gardening. She loved to do needlework and belonged to the Cocheco Quilters Guild. She made many beautiful quilts, pillows, and wall hangings for her family. She bowled for over 40 years with the Newmarket Women's League and is a legend at the local lanes. She loved to get together with family and friends and have a few clams and a lobster in the summer. Up until a few years ago she carried on the Christmas Eve Polish dinner tradition making delicacies that we all looked forward to. We will all miss her Golabkis, pierogis and tea cookies. She was known to have a good sense of humor and be one of the last to leave. She set an example for all of us about the importance of family.

She is survived by her three children, Michael Pazdon and wife Rebecca of Durham, Susan Caswell and husband Albert of Durham, and William "Scott" Pazdon his grandchildren and wife Anita of Chandler, Arizona; her sister Alice Kruczek; brother in law Richard Hogue; sister in law Joan Piecuch; six grandchildren, Melissa Pazdon, Johnny Pazdon, Michael Pazdon, Jennifer Pazdon, Valerie Caswell, and Andrew Caswell; many special nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, John Pazdon Sr. in 2006, her son John "Jack" Pazdon in 1999, and nine of her siblings.

The family would like to thank the staff at both The Pines and Exeter Hospital for the wonderful care and support they provided for her.

Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 5-8 p.m., and 11-12:30 p.m. on Friday at Kent & Pelczar Funeral Home, 77 Exeter Street, Newmarket.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 1 p.m., from St. Mary's Church, Newmarket.
