Troy Pappas Obituary

ELIOT, Maine — Troy Johnathan James Pappas, 18, of Eliot, Maine died October 5, 2012 at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston, Maine as result of a fall on the campus of Bates College.

Troy was born on December 30, 1993 and was the son of John and Mary (Blackwell) Pappas of Eliot, Maine. Besides his parents, Troy is survived by his sister, Rayna Pappas of Eliot, Maine and her fiancé Lucas Devins; His maternal grandparents, Gareth and Beverly Blackwell of Corinth, Maine and his parental grandparents, Thomas and Sally Pappas of Kenduskeag, Maine; He is also survived by his aunt, Sherry and her husband, Scott Roberts of Bradford, Maine, his uncle, Gary and his wife, Lanette Blackwell of Corinth, Maine, his aunt, Judy and her husband, Barry Brown of Exeter, Maine and his aunt, Katie Miles of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine.

He is survived by special cousins, Carrie and her husband, Kevin Worster, Annemarie Roberts, Lindsey, Emily, Craig Blackwell, Sara, Buster and Seth Brown, Paige and her husband, Kyle Martin, Monica, Jackie and Andrew Miles; His littlest cousin, Connor, held a special place in his heart.

He achieved many spectacular accomplishments in his short 18 years. He was a fun loving young man who made friends quickly. He was close with his family and enjoyed numerous outings with them, especially annual Florida trips to see his grandparents and hanging with his cousins at camp.

Troy was very goal-driven and graduated eighth in his class. He was the 2011 recipient of the Clarkson University High School Achievement Award. He was a member of Interact, Rotary International's service club for young people, student government, National Honor Society. Troy was also a member of the school's Math Team and helped Marshwood to a sixth place finish at States this year.

His competitive spirit served him well in his athletic career. While at MHS, Troy played varsity basketball for two years and was selected as the Coach's Award his senior year. Troy played four years of varsity baseball and was named a captain his junior and senior years. He made the SMAA all-defensive team 2011. Troy started as quarterback for three years on the school's football team and was named a captain his senior year. Troy was recognized as the football team's offensive MVP for 2010 and the team's MVP for the 2011 season. Additionally, he was selected to represent Marshwood in the Kora Shriner's Lobster Bowl, Maine's all-star football game. He treasured his experience with this week-long event and celebrated a victory with his teammates with a touchdown catch of his own.

Outside of school, Troy participated as a volunteer for the Friend's Project and the Special Olympic Team Portsmouth Basketball organization. During the summer he worked at Bob's Clam Hut and part-time for Fernandes and Sons Landscaping. Troy was a freshman at Bates College, majoring in premed, biochemistry and planning to attend medical school to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery. He was playing football for the Bobcats and was considering trying out for the baseball team.

Troy had numerous close friends and teammates.

Troy's tragic death became a beacon of hope for other families as his parents upheld his wishes of being a organ donor. Troy's gift will touch the lives of many.

Words cannot convey my condolences adequately, and I did not even know Troy. What I have heard of him is remarkable, a young man any parent would hope to have brought up. You were blessed to have had this exceptional human being, though for too short a time. May your memories help ease the pain of this loss, and may Troy's generous spirit live on in the lives he saved through the selfless act of organ donation. May God envelope you in his love.

When a tragedy like this happens to a family, it reminds us all of how precious life is and each day we spend with our children. There are parents all over Eliot and South Berwick who are hugging their children more meaningfully because of this. As parents, Paul and I cannot imagine how you can bear this pain, and yet we know you are a strong family and will survive this with the courage and strength and love and caring that exemplified Troy's life. You were always there for him and spent every moment possible sharing his life with him, which was a blessing for you all. I believe he is smiling down on you. We will always remember the young man who, after a long day of work, then stacked hay bales with our crew because we needed the help. His last note to us, after the graduation party, ended with "I hope you enjoyed the sandwiches" which still makes me smile. Peace to the entire family.

To The Entire Pappas Family:

I'm so deeply saddened to hear of Troy's passing. Whenever we played Marshwood, whether it be in our summer 7 on 7 league or during the regular season, it was easy to see what a high quality individual Troy was. I know from speaking to young people at both Wells High School and at Noble High School that he had a great influence on his peers across the communities of southern Maine. May all the great he did in his life help as you deal with the unimaginable pain. May God bless!

John and Mary, I never met your son or family but I wanted to share a beautiful poem to express our condolences for your loss and what an Angel Troy will be in heaven high above.

Angels In The Stars

God saw I was getting tired
as he put his arms around me
as he whispered come with me

There is a place for you in heaven
where there is no suffering and no pain
all you have to do is look up to the sky and know that you will see me

As I am an angel in the stars
what a great place to be
I am an angel of God and a
sparkle I shall be

Know that I'm watching over you
just look up and see
I'm looking watching over you
please don't be sad for me

I'm your angel in the stars
where I am happy now
you will see and one day
you will be with me

Our loss and Heavens Gain!

The Broken Cord

We little knew that morning that God
was going to call your name
In life we loved you dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose you,
You did not go alone;
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.
You left us peaceful memories,
Your love is still our guide;
And though we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same;
but as God calls us, one by one,
The Chain will link again.
