James Coombs Obituary

James Percy "Jim" Coombs, Jr. passed away September 10, 2022, at Brandon Wilde Senior Living, Memory Care and Hospice in Evans, Georgia. He was 89 years old.

Jim was born in Panama City, Florida on January 12, 1932, to James Percy Coombs, Sr. and Edith Clara Grady Coombs. He grew up in Apalachicola, Florida in the family home built by his great-grandfather, James Nathaniel Coombs.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his sister, Marianne Sloan Coombs Cunningham. His sister Edith Moody "Toto" Coombs McCluskey passed away shortly after Jim.

Jim graduated from Leon High School in Tallahassee, Florida in 1950 and from Florida State University in 1954, receiving a degree in Physics. Soon afterwards, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. After his discharge, he served in the U.S. Army Reserves at Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia. In his civilian career, he worked as a physicist at the Savannah River National Lab, U.S. Department of Energy in Aiken, South Carolina.

After retirement, he traveled throughout Europe and lived for a short time in England and Germany. He returned to Augusta and worked briefly for the Proctor & Gamble Company.

Jim was a dedicated and accomplished pianist and organist who enjoyed the classics. He selected and arranged the music for worship services at St. Luke Anglican and Catholic Church in Augusta, until poor health became an issue.

He was extremely knowledgeable about family history, and was quick to share stories of his parents', grandparents' and great-grandparents' extensive travels and adventures throughout the U.S. and Europe. He was a lifelong Republican, and enjoyed lively discussions on current events and politics of the day.

Jim is survived by his niece Claire Sloan McCluskey of Savannah, Georgia; niece Catherine Edith "Kit" Cunningham Golson of Redwood City, California; nephew Michael Glennon Cunningham of Tallahassee; great nieces Lisa Mariah Tomasi and Zoe Martine Cunningham; great nephews William Harrison English Sr. (Lindsay) and Benjamin McCluskey English; Benjamin Grady Cunningham and Zachary Coombs Cunningham. He is also survived by great nieces Tara Lynn McCluskey and Kendall Marie McCluskey and by great-grand nephew William Harrison English Jr.
