I remember Janet Ryan so clearly because I was in several of her classes for six years during Jr High and High School. Janet had a smile that would make me feel good in any class that I hated and was probably failing in... and that's a lot of classes. (Unfortunately, she couldn't help me in Gym)
What I remember most is Janet's kindness and by that I mean in just talking to me or letting me sit near her in the cafeteria sometimes... and just being nice to me when I wasn't exactly the most popular person in the West Springfield High School. It wasn't particularly cool to be seen as my friend but Janet didn't care about stuff like that and she always made me feel like a friend. And trust me, it's easy to remember the people who were kind to you... even half a century later.
I can see where Janet would have been a great teacher and so important to a lot of pre-school kids who were probably a bit scared by the whole school thing and I can just imagine her making them feel like she was their friend and that together they were in a good place. J think she learned those skills to make people feel good about themselves much earlier in her life, even before college, and I was one of the lucky ones that benefited from her kindness.
To her husband and two daughters and Grandchildren, I want to say how sorry I am that Janet has passed away, but also how happy I am that she shared her life with you and I can only imagine how happy she made all of your lives.
I hope that someday every kid in every school everywhere... pre-school thru high school, meets a Janet Ryan of their own. It's amazing how one good person can change another person's life, especially a person without a lot of friends... and that's why it is so easy for me to remember Janet.
