Allen Routzahn Obituary

Allen Riddell Routzahn, 89, of Sun City West, Arizona, previously of Frederick, Maryland, made his transition peacefully to eternal life Sunday, November 25, 2018 in the loving arms of his wife, Gherrie.

Allen was born August 8th, 1929 at the home of his parents, Charles O. Routzahn and Erma L. Routzahn at 201 E 3rd Street in Frederick Maryland. Later the family moved to Rosemont Avenue. Allen was the seventh of eight children. Allen was a long-time member of United Church of Christ in Frederick and served as a Deacon. He attended Frederick High School and went on to pursue higher education at University of Maryland on a basketball scholarship.

At the age of 24, Allen founded Routzahn's and Sons on South Market Street where he began as a door to door salesman selling appliances out of catalogs. His entrepreneurial business spirit was highly recognized by the Frederick community. In 1972, Allen was named Brand Name Appliances Retailer of the year; and, in 1975 was selected as Furniture Dealer of the year. In 1973 and 1977, Routzahn's was selected by Dealerscope magazine to be the recipient of the Pride Award. In 1985, he was very proud of recognition received from the National Retail Merchants Association and personal congratulations from President Ronald Reagan for distinguished services to retailing. Routzahn's evolved into a 13-store company with over 250 employees in MD, PA and VA. He was devoted to his business, his employees, and customers. He was a pioneer businessman and advocate of downtown Frederick. Saying he loved his home town Frederick, is an understatement.

In 1962, in partnership with United Church of Christ, Allen was campaign chair for the Bell Ringer March in Frederick MD for Mental Health. He served on the Board of Associate's for Hood College and on the Advisory Committee for Mount St. Mary's Graduate School. He was a strong supporter of the YMCA and raised funds for the new building on Market Street in Frederick. Allen made a gift to the Frederick Memorial Hospital in dedication to Routzahn's employees to support the expansion and modernization project of the early 1980s. He was an advocate of United Way in Frederick and Washington Counties in MD and Pottstown PA. He was a member of Young President's Organization and the World President's Organization.

In 1987, when Allen retired he chose Sun City West AZ after many visits to be closer to his sister Elinor Hutton and her husband, Dr. Robert Hutton. In his retirement, his passion for helping people continued through his involvement in mentoring, charity and education. In 1988, he served as Chairman of the campaign for Frederick Community College which raised over $800,000 in scholarship funds.

Allen had a zest for life and an unending desire to help people get ahead. He had an innate ability to discover the best in everyone he met. In retirement, he mentored over 50 young professionals and changed the trajectory of their lives. Allen consulted to restructure Benevilla, an important charity in Sun which supports senior's goals for independence. He was a member of the President's Club at ASU, and a member of the Board of Associates for Northern Arizona University. He was a benefactor to Banner Del Webb Hospital and was a participant in and contributor to Sun Health's Brain Research program in Sun City West.

Allen will be remembered for his business mind, integrity and love of family. Allen's authenticity and sense of humor allowed him to connect with people in a genuine way. He loved playing the piano and bridge. Allen loved to read and to challenge his mind. He was a travel enthusiast especially in retirement and recognized the beauty in every culture and place he visited. He had a strong commitment to giving back and charity, was an eternal optimist and a best friend to many.

Dear Routzahn family.
I will always have a place in my heart for your Dad. He gave my Mom a job when she found herself alone in the 60's. Working for him made her confident to face the world on her own. He always had time for a little blonde headed girl that needed a hug a swing around in a circle from a larger than life man. I was so glad that I got to speak to him last fall on the phone and even happier that he remembered my stories. I have missed seeing him around here for a long time, and my heart is heavy that it will never happen again.

All my love

I worked at Routzahn's in the 70's, first in sales and then in the advertsing dept. I went on to have a fulfilling career in advertising, thanks to Mr. Routzahn's guidance. He taught me so much, and was so interested in his employees--as people. What a loss. May he rest in peace.

To the family of Allen Routzahn,
Please accept my condolences on the passing of Mr. Routzahn.
I knew Mr. Routzahn as a young girl when my dad,George B. Barnes worked for him at his furniture store on South Market Street. My dad thought the word of him. One of my memories of him and my dad was when flat screen TV's became popular and daddy's console stopped working and he refused to buy a flat screen. He said take me to Routzahn's,they will get me a console TV. So I drove him to the store on Routzahn's Way and he explained to Mr. Routzahn or one of the boys that he only wanted a console, and of course there was not one on the show room floor, but he promised daddy that he would get him one and about three days later we got the call that there was a console TV at the store for him. Daddy was over joyed. Mr. Routzahn will be missed by many.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you!

Our sincere condolences to Gherrie, family and friends of Allen.
Allen was our first neighbor to welcome us on the day we moved into our new home in Sun City West and immediately made us feel a part of our new community. During our too short acquaintance we enjoyed the opportunity to exchange thoughts and ideas on a range of topics and to get to know Allen and his gentle manner.
God Bless.

My very first job was with Routzahn's Furniture Store. I worked part time at the sales desk and also worked the switchboard. I loved that job. The guys at the Furniture Store were so much fun to work with and Mr. Routzahn would come around from time to time. Such a friendly guy! I remember the great company picnic as well. The department store on the square corner was a Frederick Landmark and I shopped there many times. He left a great legacy in Frederick. So sorry to hear of his passing! My deepest sympathies go out to his family.

What a wonderful legacy your dad, husband, leaves. I had no idea he could play the piano! He was so generous to so many including, of course, Shelly. Please know we are thinking of all of you and are thankful that we knew Allen. With sincere sympathy, Treva and Ted

Dad, where can I begin to thank you for giving me so many opportunities and wonderful times throughout my life. I appreciated all your father-daughter talks, even though some were tough. You will be sorely missed. Life without you will offer all of us a new chapter without your joking around, teasing and wise guy pranks, that you played on us as children. I was proud to have you as my father. Rest in Peace and know that we will meet again in heaven. I will forever love you, your daughter, Lindsey
