Barbara Cornish Obituary

Barbara Lee Cornish, born December 8, 1951 in New London, Connecticut to Mary (Gregg) Cornish and Edwin R. Cornish, Jr., died August 28, 2018 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia after a brief illness.

Barbara graduated from Frederick High School in 1969. After attending Case Western Reserve University for two years, she left to pursue international travel. In 1973 while traveling across Asia, she visited Indonesia and fell in love with the culture, people, and natural beauty of the country. She immersed herself in Indonesian life, becoming fluent in both Bahasa Indonesia and the Javanese language, and studying traditional music (Gamelan) and textiles (Batik). She made her home in Surakarta (Solo) and more recently in Yogyakarta. She taught English for many years and administered English proficiency tests for students planning to study abroad.

Barbara lived with attention to her spiritual growth. She studied and incorporated practices from Buddhism, Hinduism, and Christianity into her daily life and meditation practice. Barbara was a loving daughter, sister, aunt, and wife, always helping others. Barbara greatly honored her parents, visiting and making many sacrifices to help care for them in their later years.

Barbara is survived by her husband Guntur Songglongit of Yogyakarta, Indonesia; father Dr. Edwin R. Cornish, Jr. of Frederick; sisters Toby (Anne) Cornish of Timonium, Maryland, Erin (Ellyn) Cornish, and Patricia Cornish of Frederick; brother Charles Cornish and partner Kristin Ohberg of Bend, Oregon; nieces Anisha Cornish and Anjali Cornish of Timonium, and Baby Cornish of Frederick. Her mother Mary G. Cornish died September 14, 2018. A celebration of life reception for both Barbara and her mother, Mary Cornish, will take place October 5th, 2018 at 12:00 at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Frederick.

To the Cornish family,
How extremely sad to see you have lost both your mother and sister so close together. I have lost track of the entire family with the exception of your mother who I would run into frequently at the grocery store. I recall those early years of living on Carroll Parkway next door to each other. Charles was just in diapers! Please know you are in my heartfelt prayers as you pass through these difficult times.
Very sincerely,
Treva (Cookie) Siedling
