Bob Smith Obituary

It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Bob Smith.

Bob was born to Catherine & Harry Smith in Chewsville, MD. Bob was the youngest of 4 children; Richard (deceased), James (deceased) and Patti Davis (Bill) of Williamsport, MD.

Bob was happily married to Carol Smith for the past 37 years. He had two sons, Rob Smith, of Westminster, MD, a granddaughter Madison, and two grandsons, Tom & Drew Hoeflich; and Sean Smith (Lisa) of Frederick.

One of Bob's greatest passions during his entire life, from the age of 7, was baseball. He played in pony and little leagues in Hagerstown, MD, for many teams. He also played baseball and football for Northern High in Hagerstown, from where he graduated in 1958. Bob then attended the University of Maryland, on a baseball scholarship. Later, he played in a senior league in Hagerstown with his brother Jim.

Bob was very proud to be inducted into the Washington County Sports Hall of Fame in 2003 and has provided financial scholarship support to the baseball program at Hagerstown Community College.

Bob has always credited his education at the University for his business successes in life, and remained a loyal booster to the baseball team, as well as the basketball and football programs, throughout his life. As a member of the baseball team, as an undergraduate and co-captain his senior year, Bob and his family were proud to establish the first fully funded baseball scholarship at Maryland and has had the Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium on campus dedicated in his honor.

Bob was honored to receive the first Athletic Dept. Alumni of the Year Award in 2011 from the university. Bob was appointed in 2010, to the Dean's Advisory Council for the Robert H. Smith Business School.

Bob was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Maryland, where he made many life-long friends. He served on the house core for ten years in the early 2000's.

Bob proudly served on the Board of Trustees at the university, and was a life member of various booster organizations.

Bob was a VP of Marketing and Sales for several Fortune 50 companies; Xerox, ITT, and GTE, prior to beginning his entrepreneurial years in Frederick, MD. Bob founded several businesses in Frederick, as well as a commercial real estate company, and a commercial business in Garret County, MD, all of which are currently held in the family.

Throughout his life, Bob mentored a number of young people, and always took great pleasure in their successes.

According to Bob's wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral arrangements. If you wish to honor Bob with a memorial donation his wish would be to send donations directly to the University of Maryland baseball program, at "Dirty Terps" Reserve, P.O. Box 692, at College Park, MD 20741, or an organization of your choice.
