Dr. Bryce Redington

1939 - 2025

Bryce Redington, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2025, at the age of 86. He was born to Paul and Margery Redington on May 6, 1939, in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Although he lived many years in Maryland, and retired in Frederick, Maryland, his heart never left his humble beginnings on a farm in Iowa. Bryce lived a life defined by service, scholarship, music, and kindness. A dedicated scholar, Bryce earned his bachelor's degree in zoology and master's degree in parasitology from Iowa State University. During his summers, he loved to take classes, do research, and teach others at Iowa Lakeside Laboratories. Bryce earned his doctoral degree in parasitology at the University of Maryland. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a distinguished career in both military and civilian service. Bryce proudly served his country in the United States Army, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. His service included being stationed in Long Binh, Vietnam, from 1970 to 1971 with the 9th Medical Reference Laboratory. After returning stateside, he researched tropical diseases at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. His leadership skills were soon recognized, and in 1977 he was assigned to the headquarters of what would become the U.S. Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (MRMC). In 1981, Bryce joined the staff at Uniformed Services University (USU), where he served as Director of Grants Management until 1985. He was also an Assistant Professor and taught parasitology to military medical students until 2009. He retired from active duty in October 1985 as a Lieutenant Colonel, capping a career that combined scientific expertise, operational experience, and educational leadership. Following his Army retirement, Bryce became the first principal administrative officer of the newly established Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) and facilitated the partnership between HJF and USU. He served as Executive Director of the USU Alumni Association from 1994 to 2008. Most of his 24 years at HJF were spent as Director of Events Management and Educational Programs until his retirement in 2009. Bryce was a gifted and passionate singer. He sang with the Washington Oratorio Society/Washington Chorus for 22 years and with the Frederick Chorale for 10 years. He was especially proud to have earned the distinction of being a Grammy winner, as he was a member of the Washington Oratorio Society when they received the award for Best Choral Performance in 2000. Bryce was married to his beloved wife Mary Redington for nearly 60 years. Together, they raised two children, Miriam and Matt (Leah), and were blessed with four grandchildren: Theodore, Craig, Marleigh, and Joren. He prioritized attending their games, concerts, scouting activities, and other special events. Bryce is also survived by his brothers Peter (Newbury Park, California) and Jerry (Keosauqua, Iowa), and remembered fondly by many relatives and friends. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose warmth and kindness touched everyone he met. He valued education and considered every job he held as an opportunity to help others. He loved getting to know people, enjoyed telling clean jokes, and had a knack for telling a good story. Bryce made the world a better place and helped bring out the best in the people around him. His legacy of compassion, service, and music will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. A memorial service will be held on June 26 at 2 p.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 East Church Street, Frederick, Maryland. For those who cannot attend in person, the service will be streamed in real time on facebook.com/elcfrederickmd or youtube.com/elcfrederickmd . The family may be greeted before the service, starting at 1:30 p.m. in Trunk Hall, located behind the church. There will also be a brief social gathering after the service in Trunk Hall.
