Charles Chipley Obituary

Charles L. "Chip" Chipley Jr., 94, of Frederick, Maryland, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Ruth Esther (Wiles) Chipley, who predeceased him on December 28, 2019. They were married for 64 years at the time of her passing.

Born on November 8, 1930, in Bronx, NY, he was the son of the late Charles Lawrence Chipley, Sr., and Lillian A (Jenkins) Chipley.

His father served in the Navy so Chip lived in many places growing up. He graduated from Frederick High School in 1948.

Chip enlisted in the Navy on February 21, 1949 and did his boot camp training at Naval Training Center, Great Lakes, Illinois. He completed Disbursing Clerk School June - Sept. 1949 at Bayonne, N.J. He served in Korea on board the heavy cruiser USS Rochester (CA-124) from Sept. 1949-Dec. 1952. The ship provided gun fire support for troops ashore, mine sweeping operations, blockading, and helicopter search and rescue.

He was a Petty Officer First Class when discharged in Jan. 1953. He then attended Shepherd College under the G.I. Bill. He entered Navy Officer Candidate School in Newport, R.I. in 1956. He reported aboard USS Olmsted (APA-188), a troop transport. In May 1957, he helped to land the Marines at Beiruit, Lebanon to protect U.S. Citizens. Tours of duty included: 1959-61 duty at David Taylor Model Basin, Carderock, MD; 1961-63 served on destroyer USS Barry (DD-933) and participated in Cuban Blockade 1962; 1963-65 duty of Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C.; 1965-66 duty Kodiak, Alaska; 1966-69 duty at Comptroller of the Navy; 1969-70 duty on Hospital Ship USS Sanctuary (AH-17) at Da Nang, Vietnam; 1970-73 duty at Office Joint Chiefs of Staff, Pentagon, Washington, D.C.; 1974-77 Inspector General Office Defense Logistics Agency, Atlanta, Georgia; and 1977-79 Supply Office David Taylor Model Basin.

He retired in 1979 as a Commander and has attended every USS Rochester reunion since the very first one in Sept. 1992 at Randolph, Mass.

After retiring from the Navy, he worked as a Purchasing Agent for Frederick Trading Co. for 10 years. He and his wife loved to play cards and traveled extensively around the world.

Chip was a member of the Korean War Veterans Chapter 142, Military Officers Association of America, Masonic Masons, Scottish Rite, Knight Templar, Shriner, Tin Can Sailors, American Legion, Disabled American Vets, American Veterans, NRA, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He is survived by his children, Kathy C. Lynn (Mickey), Lori A. Burch (David) and Michael A. Chipley; daughter in law, Lisa Lightner; grandchildren, Christine Coble, Daniel Lynn, Joshua Lynn, Jessica Pellegrino, Gia Chipley, Vivia Chipley, and Lilia "Sailor" Chipley; great grandchildren, McKenna Corbett, Derek Lynn and Lars Coble; his cousins; and numerous friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, Chip was preceded in death by his son, Charles L. Chipley III, and grandson, Tyler J. Hoefs.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD.

A celebration of Chip's life journey will take place at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, from the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Tim May officiating.
