Charles Spring Obituary

Charles Bernard Spring III, 56, went to the arms of his Lord and Savior on March 8, 2024. "Chuck", as he was known by friends and family, was born in Lanham, MD, on March 31, 1967. In 1974, his family moved to Wolfsville, MD, where Chuck grew up, graduating from Middletown High School in 1985. He left home to seek his fortunes after high school and found his true calling as a warrior - an Army Ranger. He served in Desert Storm and later in Afghanistan. He left the army but never strayed from being a warrior over the years, working for TSA, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as an intelligence officer in both the US and Iraq, and later in his own company.

For many years, he lived in Society Hill, SC, where he also spent long hours working remotely while restoring a large and very needy Victorian home. Chuck had mastered a ferocious look that made even the very brave quiver and quake, but his friends and family knew there was a heart of gold behind the facade. He enjoyed nothing more than a fine red wine and a bonfire, except perhaps riding his Indian motorcycle, including a cross-country trip. He was active in his church and community, and he took great interest in guiding his three stepchildren.

In the Fall of 2014, he was diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer, and he fought his most incredible battle against the disease and its mutations for nearly a decade, amazing his doctors and everyone around him. That battle came to an end on March 8, 2024, in La Quinta, CA. At his request his ashes are interred at Baltimore National Cemetery near Catonsvillle, MD.

Chuck is survived by his mother, Jean Hickman Spring and companion Bruce McDonald of Potomac; his father, Charles and wife Ellan of Middletown; and his brother Jeffrey and wife Lucy, also of Middletown; three aunts; one uncle and several cousins, nieces and nephews; and Steve Bayrd, a special 18-year buddy he met in Iraq, who provided Chuck much support over the years. While his marriage to Lori Strauch ended in divorce, she and her family maintained caring connections with him.

Memorial donations to any veterans' organization will be greatly appreciated by his family.

Chuck was one my best friends in high school. You could always count on him. I´m sure many others felt the same way. Godspeed Chuck - you were one of the best.

What a great friend Chuck was from high school in Maryland to the time we both lived in NC years later and would hang out and ride motorcycles together. Many, many fond memories with a great guy. He will be missed.
