Dr. James E. Stoner Jr., 91, of Walkersville, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at Northampton Manor Nursing Home, Frederick. He was the husband of Eliza Stoner. They were married for 65 years.
Born June 25, 1918, in Frederick, he was the son of the late James E. Stoner and Hazel Eyler Stoner.
Dr. Stoner was hard working, steadfast and trustworthy, as well as a loving husband, father and friend.
He graduated from Western Maryland and University of Maryland Medical School.
He entered the Army in 1944, during World War II, and served for two years. He then began his medical practice in Walkersville with Dr. Carroll Easterday. He was in practice for almost 50 years with several doctors including Dr. Ernest Dettbarn and Dr. B.O. Thomas Jr. He retired May 1, 1994, to finally fully enjoy his leisure time.
During his college years, James led a band "Stoner and his Pebbles" where he played the lead trumpet. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, golfing, gardening and playing cards. One of his greatest loves was jazz. He made many trips with Eliza to the Sacramento Jazz Festival.
He was very active as a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Glade Valley Lions Club and the Walkersville Fire Dept. He served on the Walkersville Town Council and the Walkersville F&M Bank Board. He was also a member of the Frederick County Medical Society.
In addition to his wife Eliza, he is survived by his three daughters, Ann Humphries of Roanoke, Va., Tish Sawyer and husband, Tom, of Spokane, Wash., and Betsy Weber of Walkersville; grandchildren Michael, Rebecca, Rhianna, Erin and Ben; great-grandchildren, Maddi and Emmi; sisters, Kitty Zinkhan of Baltimore, and Helen Dettbarn of St. Michaels.
He was predeceased by a son, Jimmy Stoner.
A memorial service will be held at noon Friday, Aug. 28, where the family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to services at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville, with the Rev. Mark Foucart officiating.
Burial will be private for family only.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 14 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville, MD 21793.
