David Andrews Obituary

The Reverend David Hafer Andrews, 85, of Smithsburg, Maryland, passed from this life on November 25, 2013, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, after a lifetime of service to God. He was born April 14, 1928, the son of The Reverend Elmer Ross Andrews, a minister in the Evangelical United Brethren Church, and his wife, Helen (Hafer) Andrews. He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School (1945), Lebanon Valley College (1951) in Annville, Pennsylvania and Bonebrake (United) Seminary (1954) in Dayton, Ohio. He earned an advanced degree in Theology from Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington, D.C.

He was ordained into the ministry in the Evangelical United Brethren Church in 1954, serving congregations in Upper Strasburg, Dillsburg and York, Pennsylvania and in Baltimore. Maryland. In 1970 he was transferred to the Baltimore Conference of the United Methodist Church following a denominational merger, serving congregations in Silver Spring and Bethesda.

He also served the United Methodist Church as Superintendent of the Frederick District, Council Director of the Baltimore Conference, and Coordinator for the Appalachian Development Commission. After his retirement, he continued to be active as a volunteer chaplain at Washington County Hospital in Hagerstown, Maryland.

The Reverend Andrews was a talented humorist, meticulous organizer, amateur woodworker and gardener. He was a student of Civil War history and a fan of trains and airplanes. He was a loving and beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

The Reverend Andrews is survived by his wife of 64 years, Grace Marie (Willard) Andrews of Sabillasville, Maryland. He is also survived by his sister, Dorothy (Andrews) Clever, of Thurmont, Maryland, and by three daughters and a son, their spouses, children and grandchildren: Barbara (Andrews) Fogg and her husband Norman, of Maryland, and children Michael and Susan; Rebecca (Andrews) Herman and her husband Jonathan, of Maryland, and daughters Rachel, Emily, Alissa and Claire; Deborah Andrews and her husband Steve Howards, of Colorado, and sons Koby and Jonah; and Robert Andrews and his wife Tamara, of Oregon. He was pre-deceased by his son, The Reverend Richard Andrews, in July, 2013, who is survived by his widow, Susan Andrews, and his children, The Reverend Sarah (Andrews) Schlieckert, The Reverend Daniel Andrews, Elizabeth and Jordan Andrews, and their mother Patricia Andrews. Family also includes a cousin, Audrey Asbury, two great-granddaughters, Anna and Mary, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life, officiated by Reverend Ronald Kurtz of Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 6, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 21006 Twin Springs Drive in Chewsville, Maryland. Arrangements are provided by Davis Funeral Home of Smithsburg, Maryland. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Mount Bethel United Methodist Church, 14110 Stottlemyer Road, Smithsburg, Maryland 21783, or to the Hagerstown Aviation Museum, 14235 Oak Springs Road, Hagerstown, Maryland 21742.
