Gary Heerd Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Gary Lee Heerd, Sr. who departed this life to join the Lord on October 8, 2025 at Frederick Health Hospital. Gary was born July 24, 1941 in Frederick, to the late Edward L. Heerd and Margaret Allen Heerd. Gary leaves behind Sandra Lea McIntosh Heerd, his wife of 64 years. Gary and Sandy met at the Frederick Roller Rink where he knew she was the one for him after they took up roller dancing together.

Gary was a member of the class of 1959 at Frederick High School where he was active in several sports including track, in which he set a record at the time for the one-mile run. He was also a talented painter in high school and was featured in the Frederick News Post displaying his painting of a bald eagle.

Gary was a member of the Maryland National Guard before joining the Frederick City Police under Chief Charles Main. He retired from the Frederick City Police Department after 25 years as a Second Lieutenant. Gary was always taking on new responsibilities with the Department. He formed the first physical fitness class for recruits and could be seen running them up North Market Street when the police headquarters was located at Market and eighth streets. He was a member of the first SWAT team for the Department and was an expert with his service revolver as he always placed at or among the top on qualification days. Gary also took the lead with the newly formed Neighborhood Watch Program and received an award for his work from Governor Harry Hughes at the State House in Annapolis.

Gary enjoyed being outdoors. He was an avid fisherman who loved to spend time fishing the Monocacy River in his canoe. He also enjoyed bow hunting, although he would much rather watch the deer around him than harvest one. Gary also enjoyed watching the Steelers, Orioles, and Nationals.

In addition to his wife, Gary is survived by his son Gary L. Heerd, Jr. (Susan) of Martinsburg, WV, son Todd D. Heerd (Heather) of Frederick, granddaughters Aimee, Emily, and Alexandra, great-grandchildren Lyla, Ira, Talya, and Audra, brother Phillip Heerd (Kathy) of Martinsburg, WV as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Gary was preceded in death by his brother Alan Heerd.

Upon Gary's request, interment will be private. Donations may be made in Gary's memory to the American Heart Association, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Frederick Friends of Our County Animal Shelter or The American Cancer Society.
