Gene Morris Obituary

Gene Milton Morris died on March 29, 2024 in Frederick, Maryland, at the age of 93. Born in Kirksey, Kentucky, Gene was the fourth son of the late Dallas Este Morris and Ruby (Smith) Morris. The family moved to Maryland when Gene was a child, where he graduated from Gaithersburg High School.

Gene served in the United States Army from 1951 to 1954, spending two years in Tokyo, Japan, in the Army Security Agency. During his military service, Gene honed his love of puzzles and words, and his cryptic responses to probing inquiries about his duties. This served him well in his work for law firms in New York City from the late 1960s through the 1980s, and in unerringly completing the New York Times Sunday crossword-in ink-even after he retired in the early 90s and returned to Gaithersburg to be closer to family.

Gene loved travel, drama, classical organ music, and treating family to a musical and brunch atop the World Trade Center whenever we visited. He also relished trouncing us at Scrabble and never missing an opportunity for a little witty banter or wry commentary.

His surviving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and their spouses are grateful for his generosity and will fondly remember his verbal prowess. Gene is predeceased by his three older brothers: Harold, J.D., and Paul.

Services will be private. Gene Morris

So sorry we were unaware of Gene´s passing. We are planning a Palmer reunion which includes the Morris family as Gene´s dad, our Uncle Estie, was the sister of Sallie Ann Morris who married John Burto Palmer-Dans grandmother. The last time we saw Gene was at Ann (Murphy) Brandt´s 80th birthday party when we sat at the table with Gene and his sister-in-law Jean Morris. Any of the Morris family who would like to attend the reunion on June 22, 2024 near Annapolis, MD, please please contact me. We´d love to see any or all of you. Last time was in 1993.
Condolences to all of you. Gene was always a delight to talk to!

i have heard of gene morris for most of my life my sister carolyn (smith) booth went to school with him and evidently were friends. she talked fondly about him over the years and i think he befriended her in school because of her disability. they talked from time to time and believe he went to visit while she was living in new york. i always teased her about him as a boyfriend but she said it was not like that. several times i decided to look up this man that carolyn talked about but never did. she is in a nursing home in greenfield ma with demetia she will be 95 in may. i am not sure if i should tell her he passed away not knowing her state of mind. but thank you mr gene morris for being a friend to my sister. prayers to his family
