Gloria M. Werking

1927 - 2017

Lois "Gloria" Murray Werking, 89, returned to her heavenly home on Saturday, August 26, 2017. She was living at Homewood in Frederick MD.

Gloria was born to the late Marshall and Gladys Murray, of Frederick, on September 22, 1927. She was a member of the Frederick High School Class of 1944. Her class was the first group to attend all four years in the new school. After school she worked for Citizen's Bank in Frederick as a teller. She moved to Walkersville after her marriage and was employed by Farmer's and Mechanics Bank. In 1969 she began working at Farm Credit in Frederick until her retirement in 1988.

Gloria loved to help people and participated in many clubs and organizations throughout her 89 years. After high school she volunteered as a USO hostess until the end of WW II. In 1950 she joined the Walkersville Homemakers Club. As a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Walkersville she served on the church Council. She was a life member of the Walkersville Rescue Company and enjoyed working banquets and helping with Bingo. She was a member of the Rose Hill Garden club, the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and the Walkersville Food Bank.

But her true passion began in 1993 when she started volunteering at Walkersville Elementary School in kindergarten. She quickly became known to all as "Miss Gloria". She continued her passion of reading to young children even after moving to Homewood in 2009. She was an active member of the Sunshine Reader's club at Homewood and read to children at Monocacy and Brunswick Elementary schools.

Gloria is preceded in death by her loving husband James Werking, who passed away in 1992. Married on September 25, 1948, they enjoyed 44 wonderful years together living in Walkersville and raising their children.

Gloria is survived by her children, Jim Werking of Baltimore, MD and Ann Reever of Frederick, MD. Three grandchildren, Ryan Werking and his wife Jenny of Charleston, South Carolina, Kelly Mink and her husband, Doug of Perry Hall, MD, and Sarah Fritz and her husband Trent, of Frederick, MD. She will be missed by her four great-grandchildren, Whitney Werking and Ethan, Owen, and Isla Mink.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 from 7-9pm at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick MD.

A celebration of Gloria's life will be held at the Homewood Chapel, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, on September 9, 2017 at 10am.

Burial will take place privately at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
