Howard Selby Obituary

Mr. Howard Bernard Selby, 96, of Frederick, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was the loving husband of the late Hypatia (Smith) Selby, who preceded him in death in 2018.

Born January 4, 1928 in New Market, he was the son of the late H. Bernard and K. Ann (Warthan) Selby.

Howard was a graduate of Frederick High School Class of 1945. He married Pacia in June 1951. His employment included the Farmers Co-op, C. Oland Meitzler and Griffith Consumers. His real love was working on the milk truck with his father. His favorite job was working at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home for over 25 years.

Howard was a member of the Philanthropic Lodge #168 in New Market. He was the Master in 1953, also served as secretary for many years and he received his 70 year pin in 2019. He was also a member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry since 1969.

He was a Past Secretary of the Central Maryland Feed Dealers, a Past Treasurer of East Frederick Little League, Midget Football, Statistician for Frederick Babe Ruth League of 17 years (1982 Babe Ruth World Series official scorekeeper). He was a member of the FSK Post 11 SAL for 38 years where he also served on the baseball committee.

He was a life long member of the New Market UMC where he served as treasure for over 30 years and also served as a trustee.

He was a member of the ROMEOS lunch group for many years.

Howard is survived by his sons; Michael H. Selby and wife Cindy and Philip N. Selby and wife Betsy, grandson; Bryce Selby and wife Emily, great-grandson; Ezra Selby, numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Carroll "Gene" Selby and wife Gloria.

The family will receive friends from 4pm to 6:45pm, Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at the Keeney and Basford Funeral Home, 106 E. Church, Frederick, MD 21701 immediately followed by a Masonic service. The funeral service will be held at 11:00AM, on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the funeral home. The interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

The family would like to thank the staff at Montevue Assisted Living and more recently Citizens Care and Rehabilitation for their loving care of Howard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Market UMC, 5501 Old New Market Road, New Market, MD 21774.

Mr. Selby was a fixture in thousands of young boys' journey through sports in Frederick. He, along with Mrs. Selby, were always at a field, always in a gym, always had a smile, always had an encouraging word. I wish there was a way to count just how many games of one sport or another that Mr. and Mrs. Selby watched. We were all better for it. Mike and Phil, thanks for sharing your Dad and Mom with all of us through our younger years. You both and our families are in my thoughts and prayers.

Mr. Shelby was a wonderful man. He was so kind to me and may young son when we lost or husband/father so young. He allowed my son to play in the limo and took him on an extended ride through the cemetery.

I knew Howard from my years of living and working at the Keeney and Basford funeral home. I remember him as a kind and gentle man. I haven't seen him for a long time, but I'm sure he will be missed by those closest to him. I have fond memories of this sweet man.

Howard was a wonderful person. My first experience with Howard was at Keeney Basford Funeral home where he always had a kind word and a smile on his face for you. He and Patia always loved coming to the Shrimp and Oyster Feeds the American Legion baseball sponsored each year. My last time of see Howard was at Montevue Assisted Living. I would always visit with him after I would go visit my elderly friend. Sometimes he would be out with Phil and the ROMEO'S and I would miss him. He also had a great love for baseball even though we liked different teams he was ok with that. I will miss you Howard you were a great friend. My condolences to Phil and Mike and their families. Uncle Howard was like my second father. As he had no daughters of his own, he always treated us with the love and affection of more than just an uncle. When I had a car accident in my parents first brand new car, shortly after getting my drivers license, I was sure my parents would be furious and the one I called was Uncle Howard! He came immediately to my rescue. I have a million memories of him and Aunt Pac through my life and I have been blessed beyond measure by having him be a part of it. Rest well now Uncle Howard. Love you always!
