J. Stambaugh Obituary

Mr. John William "Bill" Stambaugh, 93, of Keymar, died Wednesday, May 5, 2004 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.

He was the husband of the late Hazel B. DeBerry Stambaugh, his wife of 49 years who died in 1980.

Born May 5, 1911 in Thurmont, he was the son of the late J. Curtis and Margaret Forney Stambaugh. His mother died when he was a toddler and he was raised by his stepmother, the late Susan A. Whitmore Stambaugh, the only mother he ever knew.

Mr. Stambaugh was employed by the Western Maryland Sealtest Dairy in Detour during the 1930s and later farmed in the Detour area for a number of years. In 1959 he moved to the village of Keysville, where he and his late wife operated a small grocery store. He also contracted several school buses and drove various routes for the Carroll County Board of Education. He retired in 1981.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Keysville. He was a charter member of the Terra Rubra Lions Club and bowled for their team for many years.

Surviving are his son, Larry William Stambaugh and wife Shelbe of Keymar; daughters Betty Jean Sell of Walkersville, Patsy M. Buckingham and husband Berry of Keymar, Janet A. Keyton and husband Ronald of Hagerstown, Judith A. Speak and husband Kevin of Taneytown; grandchildren Edward G. Sell II of Frederick, S. Diane Fauble and husband Arthur of Walkersville, Bradford Gist of Westminster, Jeffrey Gist and wife Debbie of Westminster, Michael Keyton and wife Vickie of Clear Spring, Theresa Bricker of Wells Tannery, Pa., Dennis W. Stambaugh and wife Pam of Gettysburg, Pa., Shari Norris and husband Chuck of Waynesboro, Pa., Lisa Bruchey and husband Jeff of Taneytown, Melissa Stephens and husband Yates of Taneytown, Denise Cook and husband Otis of Frederick, Heather Aaron and husband Jeffrey of Taneytown, Paul Baugher and wife Connie of Taneytown, Daniel Baugher Jr. and wife Louann of Taneytown and Scott Baugher of Taneytown and 23 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stambaugh was predeceased by a daughter, Linda L. Gist, two sisters, Catherine E. Eckard and Marie B. Rodkey and a son-in-law, Edward Sell.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 9 at the Skiles Funeral Home, 136 East Baltimore St., Taneytown.

Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, May 10 at Grace United Church of Christ, Keysville. His pastor, the Rev. John P. Silassy will officiate. Interment will be in Keysville Union Cemetery.
