James Matheson Obituary

James C. Matheson, 81, of Frederick, Maryland passed away on January 2, 2024, at Heartfields Assisted Living, Frederick, MD.

Jim was born on June 14, 1942, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, the son of the late Fred and Ann Matheson. He was the beloved husband of Susan Matheson for 28 years.

He is survived by his wife, Susan Matheson; his son, Robert Horne; stepchildren, Scott Georgen (Nicole), Karen Routzahn (Gary), Kristine Goad, David Mathes (Sara) and grandchildren Braeden Horne, Donovan and Gillian Goad, Taylor and Lauren Routzahn and Alex, Clara and Lily Georgen. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Gessner, Santa Fe, NM; his beloved Aunt Lorna, Ontario, Canada; nephews and nieces, William, Mike, Mark, Amanda and Molly and many cousins from Canada and South Carolina.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Ray Matheson.

Jim attended Wayne State University before proudly serving in the Navy during the Vietnam War. Jim enjoyed a long career with various engineering companies, most recently as a contractor for the Job Corps. He traveled extensively for work and served as a mentor for his colleagues. Jim enjoyed various hobbies such as wood-working and golf. In his retirement, he was an active member of Frederick County Landmarks Foundation and served on the board of directors. He particularly enjoyed volunteering at Schifferstadt Architectural Museum and serving on the Barnstormers Barn Tour committee. Jim was always ready to lend a much appreciated helping hand, usually accompanied by a corny joke. Jim also enjoyed travelling for pleasure with his wife Susan, including multiple trips to Scotland to explore his heritage. He delighted in spending time with family and was very involved with his grandchildren, including grand dog Cinder. He entertained many with his Louis Armstrong renditions, ready dance moves and sense of humor. His fun, easy going personality will be greatly missed.

Jim fought a courageous battle with Parkinson's in his last few years. He had wonderful, supportive friends in his Rock Steady Boxing Parkinson's class at the Frederick YMCA and Baker Brain & Balance Rehab Group. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Heartfields Memory Care and Frederick Health Hospice for the loving care they provided during his stay.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson's Foundation or the Frederick Health Hospice.

The family will receive friends on Friday, Jan. 12th, from 2-5 pm at Resthaven Funeral Home a& Crematory Inc 9501 BCatoctin Mountain Hwy, Frederick, MD 21701 James Matheson
