Janice Irene Lewis Harshman of Frederick, Maryland passed away at her son's home on Sunday, December 31, 2023.

Janice was born on June 12, 1932, on Highland School Road, Myersville, Maryland to the late Roger W. Lewis and Hilda Mae Lewis. She was baptized at age eleven in the cold waters of Middle Creek at Grossnickle Church of the Brethren. She lived the rest of her life fully devoted to Jesus.

She was a graduate of Middletown High School class of 1950, the first class to have twelve full years. Janice graduated as a registered nurse from Church Home & Hospital of Nursing (now known as Johns Hopkins School of Nursing) Baltimore, Maryland in 1953. She worked at Church Home & Hospital for one year before returning to Frederick to begin working at Frederick Memorial Hospital for the next three years.

On April 17, 1955, she married Maynard William Harshman, and they enjoyed forty-three happy years together before his passing in February 1998. After their marriage she moved to the family farm on Elmer Derr Road where she became an unofficial vet, errand-runner, gardener, and canner. When her youngest daughter started school, she returned to private duty nursing. After retiring from nursing, she was a hospice volunteer. A member and deacon of Frederick Church of the Brethren for more than sixty years, she enjoyed serving in many capacities including teaching a young adult class with her husband. She also was a delegate for Church of the Brethren Annual Conference and committee chairperson for the Mid-Atlantic Disaster Auction for many years.

In retirement, she and Maynard travelled extensively visiting forty-eight states, Puerto Rico, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Switzerland, Canada, and Austria. After Maynard's death she continued to travel to Hawaii, Alaska, England, Ireland, and Scotland. She also cruised to Bermuda, Jamaica, Cozumel, and the Grand Caymans with her children and grandchildren.

She is predeceased by her parents, husband, and her sister Doris Cline.

She is survived by her son Vaughn Harshman (Diane) and daughters Dana James and Christy Beth Brandenburg (Stephen).

Additionally, she is survived by her dearly loved grandchildren, Nathan Harshman, Ellen Brandenburg, Grant Brandenburg, Elaine Brandenburg, and Bryce James.

Janice was a sweet friend who we have truly missed over the past year she had a wonderful sense of humor. She was a woman of faith who lived her faith. She challenged us to do better. I´m sure her legacy lives on thru her family and friends. She is thought of often. The picture is she and Sluce Droneburg on one of our visits together. Sandy & Ed

Dear Vaughn, Dana, and Christy Beth,
You are in my thoughts and prayers at the passing of your precious Mother. Janice was a special friend throughout our years at the Frederick Church of the Brethren. It is hard to describe the bond we shared -- a mutual love and caring, always there and understood. She and my husband Bobby served on Social Action together and became good friends. Her support through the committee and during his health issues remind us of her unselfish and caring ways. Rest now Janice in the arms of Jesus. In Christian Love, Jo Ann Tichnell

I have many fond memories of Mrs. Harshman and being very close friends with Christy Beth I've known Janice for over 40 years. The Harshman's were kind enough to take me on vacation with them as a friend for Christy Beth and I have many fond memories of those vacations. Janice was always a kind, loving person and devoted to Jesus. She will be missed greatly and I know she was very much loved by her children and grandchildren. I feel blessed to have known her and she has made a lasting legacy through her family. My love and sympathy to her entire family. You all are in my prayers - Kelly Sine

As a child I grew up on Highland MD and was a frequent visitor to the.Lewis family home. Janice and her sister were very nice people. Although they were a few years older than me they always had time to talk to us kids. God has had Doris for quite a few years. Now they can be reunited and enjoy the love again of their wonderful parents. God bless the family and may fond memories of Janice help in this time of sorrow.

Although I did not know Janice, my mother was born and raised right down the road from where Janice grew up. My mother would have been 13 in 1923. I do remember Janice´s parents always working so hard and always being happy. Janice certainly made major contributions to humanity and to community. Blesssings to the entire family.
