John Benedict Obituary

Mr. John Richard Benedict Sr., 85, of Mount Airy, died early Saturday, May 29, 2010, at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Mrs. Marilyn Elinor Batter Benedict, his wife of 64 1/2 years.

Born May 16, 1925, in Silver Spring, he was a son of the late Charles Junken and Margaret "Munnie" Olds Benedict. He was a 1943 graduate of Montgomery Blair High School and was a World War II Army veteran who fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Mr. Benedict served as editor of the Montgomery County Suburban Record for 26 years. He retired in 1990.

He attended Damascus and Providence United Methodist churches.

He was a highly energetic man who enjoyed playing tennis, baseball, coaching, gardening, history, time and correspondence with family, writing poetry, playing cards, and sports exercises in general. He always had great joy and pride for his family's love and support for one another.

Besides his wife, he is survived by children, John "Rocky" Benedict Jr., and wife, Judy, of New Market, Carl R. Benedict and wife, Debbie, of Hagerstown, Linda C. Benedict of Greenville, S.C., and Laura C. Densock and husband, Rob, of Kemptown; 10 grandchildren, Cindy, Kathy, Heather, Bill, C.J., Scott, Dylan, Lily, Ruby and Brady; four great-grandchildren, Anya, Caitlyn, Ava and Will; as well as siblings, Margaret "Sis" MacNeill of Florida, and Henry "Beanie" Benedict and wife, Lorene, of Rockville.

Besides his parents, Mr. Benedict was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Jessica, who died June 4, 2009; and by siblings, Ruth Mary "Yumma" Turner and Charles J. Benedict Jr.

The Molesworth-Williams Funeral Home, Damascus, is handling the arrangements. There will not be calling at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Providence United Methodist Church, 3716 Kemptown Church Road, Monrovia. The Rev. Donna L. Renn, pastor of the church, will officiate. Inurnment will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mr. Benedict's name to NABF Scholarship Fund and sent to the Amateur Baseball Federation, P.O. Box 705, Bowie, MD 20718-0705. Information about the scholarship can be obtained at NABF.com.
