John Umbel Obituary
Son of Wilbur and Helen Umbel, Jack was born at home in Emmitsburg on January 29th, 1938. He served in the U.S Air Force and worked a number of jobs, but ultimately found his passion in teaching. He spent the majority of his teaching career at Catoctin High School.
He is survived and loved deeply by wife, Mary Alice Umbel, daughter Mary Aileen Shea and her husband Jeremy of Dartmouth, MA, son David Umbel and his wife Elena of Helotes, TX, 7 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Jack also leaves behind loving siblings, Beatrice Umbel, Bill Umbel, Ruth Clarke, Dave Umbel, Clarence Umbel, Jim Umbel, Austin Umbel, brother-in-low Michael Langley and a special niece, Anne Benjamin. He is predeceased by sister Carolyn Clarke.
Jack impacted countless lives in his family and his community. He was loved deeply and widely for his kindness, patience and giving heart.
Services will be private, per his request. Donations in Jack's memory may be made to Seton Center in Emmitsburg, MD.

When I first met him in 9th grade history class (1981-1982), he was intimidating and strict. But soon became one of my favorite teachers. His love of history and teaching style helped fuel my love for it. Prayers and thoughts are with the family.

Jack was a wonderful person and colleague whom I had the pleasure of teaching and working with at Catoctin High School for many years. He was an excellent teacher and kind hearted individual. I am greatful for having the opportunity to work in the same school with him and he touched many lives in this community. God grant him peace

Mr. Umbel was my 9th grade history teacher. A bit intimidating at first, but I learned that he had so much knowledge in there to pass to his students and he was very excited to do just that. Later I learned he had way more patience than most adults do with teenagers. He was a good teacher and I'm sure a good man. My sympathy is with his family during this difficult time.
