Kenneth Anders Obituary
Mr. Kenneth Payton "Ken" Anders, 76, of 214 Sunhigh Drive, Thurmont, died Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Frederick Memorial Hospital.
He was the husband of Margaret Lucille Hartman Anders, who died Oct. 5, 1990.
Born Feb. 28, 1922, in Rocky Ridge, he was a son of the late Grayson Howard and Grace Emma Brown Anders.
Mr. Anders served with the 29th Division, Company A, 115th Infantry during World War II as a mortar gunner. He landed at Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944, with one of the first assault waves. He was wounded in combat by mortar fire on July 11, 1944.
He was the recipient of many decorations and citations including two Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, Bronze Arrowhead, Expert Infantry's Badge and Combat Infantry Badge.
Before entering the service he worked as a painter with his father. After being wounded, he pursued gunsmithing and watch repair. He also had interests which included hunting, fishing, automobiles and motorcycles.
Surviving are five children, Patricia Bledsoe-Anders and husband James of Rocky Ridge, Lynn Stambaugh and husband Philip of Frederick, Kenneth G. Anders and wife Janet of Hagerstown, Wade J. Anders and wife Kathy of West Virginia, and Mark H. Anders of Frederick; 11 grandchildren, Andrew Campbell, Jeremiah Campbell, Elizabeth Anders, Shelly Sandoval, Gina Stambaugh, Nora Anders, Kelly Anders, Evan Anders, Amy Grace Anders, Travis P. Anders and Josh Anders; one great-grandson, Benjamin Sandoval; and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Anders was preceded in death by two sisters, Zelda Anders and Beatrice Irene Anders Angell; and three brothers, Atlee, Wade H. and Kermit Anders.
Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 12, at the Thurmont Funeral Home of Robert E. Dailey & Son, 615 E. Main St. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Funeral services will begin at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13, at the funeral home.
The Rev. James Russell will officiate.
Interment will be in Mount Tabor Cemetery, Rocky Ridge.
