Louise Royer Obituary

Mrs. Louise Gall Royer, 96 of Thurmont, died Monday, April 17, 2006 at the Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Samuel Theodore Royer Jr. who died in 1986.

Born in Thurmont on January 25, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Carl Stanley and Lottie Elizabeth Creeger Gall. A graduate of the University of Maryland with a Bachelor of Science degree in journalism, she was a school teacher in the Thurmont area. Along with her husband, Louise farmed on the Hillside turkey and beef farm, and also worked in the grocery store in Thurmont. They then decided to open and operate the Royer's Restaurant in 1958, transferring ownership to their youngest son in the 1970's. Louise continued to work with her son Samuel, who established Royer's Catering in 1972, well into the 1990's.

A longtime member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, she was one of the first female members of the church's council. Louise volunteered with Frederick County Hospice and worked with the American Red Cross as a volunteer on their blood mobile drives.

Known for her cooking and baking, she loved to quilt, was a gardener, avid Bridge player, and did aerobics up into her 80's. A loving mother, grandmother and friend to all, she will be missed by all that knew her.

Survivors include her five children; Elizabeth Royer Watson and husband Spencer C. of Sabillasville, Dr. Carl Gall Royer and wife Constance of Roan Mountain, Tenn., Rebecca Royer Urian and husband John of Thurmont, Pauline Royer Stitely of Kingsport, Tenn., and Samuel Theodore Royer III and wife Eileen of Thurmont; ten grandchildren, Edwin Carpenter Jr., Becky Carpenter, Mary Beth Johnson, Theodore Royer, Carl G. Royer II, Mark Urian, Michael Urian, Heather Stitely Corey, John Eric Royer, and Samuel Theodore Royer IV; fifteen great-grandchildren; and her sister, Pauline Gall Smith of Thurmont.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9:00 p.m. at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont, Md. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2006 at the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roland Hobbs officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Louise's grandsons. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Cemetery in Thurmont.

Memorials may be made to the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 15 North Church Street, Thurmont, MD, 21788.
