Mary Warshowsky

On June 11, 2025, Mary Elizabeth Happ Warshowsky passed away peacefully in Harlingen, TX. Mary was born September 14, 1934, in Beaumont, TX. As a teenager, her family moved to Maryland. While living in Frederick, MD, she met and married Benjamin Warshowsky. Together they became active members of the Frederick community where they raised their three children. Eventually, they retired to Indialantic, FL, to be near their sons and grandkids. Mary went back and forth between Florida and Texas for many years saying she had two lives and she loved them both before moving full time to live in Texas with her daughter and family.

She joins her husband Benjamin Warshowsky; her son, Jay David Warshowsky (Jamie); her sister Jean Hudson; and her brother Howell "Buddy" Happ in the World to Come. She is survived by her brother, John Happ; her son, Stephen Happ Warshowsky (Cindy); her daughter Abby Lynn Warshowsky (Luis Gonzalez); her grandchildren Philip, Hannah, Morgan, Kacie, Alaina, Jessica, Lupita, Alfredo, Adriana, Ben, and Tona; and her 3 great grandchildren.

To many, Mary was simply known as "Grandma," but she was also an "Outstanding Woman" long before. Mary truly embodied "Justice, Justice We Shall Pursue" from being president of the League of Women Voters in Frederick, MD, in 1964 to leading girl scouts who still remember the impact she had in their lives to grabbing Donald Rumsfeld by the tie to get him to listen to her during her activist days fighting the War on Poverty. She, in all that she did, really let people know that she was "here." Through her actions, she not only showed who she was, but she actively participated in Tikkun Olam, repairing the world.

When Mary wasn't tackling issues of justice, she sang (beautifully), painted watercolors, danced ballroom, and read crime novels - that is, until she discovered solitaire on her iPad. Perhaps the only things she loved more than these were a Chili's chocolate molten lava cake, a diet coke float, or her 10:00 PM ice cream cone. Above all, she loved her family.

Apart from the poor waiters she tasked with bringing her extra napkins, everyone she gave the pleasure of meeting her will miss her dearly. May her memory forever be a blessing.

She was laid to rest in Florida with her beloved husband, Ben, and her son, Jay, on June 17, 2025. For her Texas friends and family, we wish to celebrate her memory on July 27, 2025 at Temple Beth Israel at 1702 E. Jackson Ave. in Harlingen, TX, 78550 at 2:00 PM Please join us as we remember her.
