I used to see Mike almost daily at the DIAC. He always had a smile and a cheerful disposition.... and he ALWAYS has his USMC lanyard around his neck. He died too soon, but he was faithful to the Marines until the end, I'm sure. Semper Fidelis, Mike.

My deepest sympathy for your loss. Mike was super guy - I signed him in for his first day at DIA many years ago - we worked together and I remember celebrating the birth of his son John. Hugs to Jamy, John, Meghan, and Leah.

To Jamy, John, Meghan and Leah go my heartfelt condolences - please know that you and the rest of your family were the constant joy of Mike's life even when he was not at home. Mike exuded more joy, vitality and good humor into our work than anyone I've ever known. I met him in 1991 as a colleague at the Pentagon and our paths crossed repeatedly over the ensuing years - to my great good fortune. We're both locals and both Terps, both DC natives and Marylanders with a shared trajectory from DC, College Park and back to DC. He unfailingly - always - brought out the best in all of us - hundreds of colleagues and friends whose lives he touched. Please know that you and your family are in our prayers.

I first met Mike when he came to the Pentagon Alert Center. We were friends and co-workers for many years, both at the Pentagon and DIAC. He regularly worked the most difficult assignments, including night shifts, weekends, and a long line of crisis working groups. I salute Mike for his commitment to excellence and many contributions to U.S. security and coalition building during dangerous times. I miss him and extend my deepest condolences to the Freed family.

For Robert Estrada who worked with both me and Mike Freed at DIA, I retired from DIA in 2009. Then Mike and I worked together as defense contractors after that.

To the Freed Family, my sincerest condolences at the passing of your husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Michael Freed. I knew and worked with Michael in the Pentagon in the mid 1980s. He was always a friendly face in a place where most people did not have time to say hello. I later ran into Mike in the DIAC as our careers progressed. I am only sorry I did not know him better. I hope this note is of comfort to you all, and may god bless the Freed family for generations to come. Michael was a great man.
Sincerely,
Robert M. Estrada

Jamy, Megan, Leah, and John: Mike was one of my favorite cousins. I idolized him when I was a kid and spent many sleep overs at my Aunt Bettye's. Even though he was 5 years older, he was kind to a punk like me. He was one of the first on our side of the family to welcome me back after we moved back to States after living out west and in Canada in the 80s.
It is warming and comforting to see what a beautiful family and life you all made. I was glad I had a chance to catch up a little bit with Mike near the end. It really stood out how proud he was of his kids. We hope we can see you all in May.

Jamy and family, Mike was such a big happy presence, he will be greatly missed. Tho I only had the few 40 years of knowing his wit and raspy laugh, Bob is feeling like he lost a brother of childhood. We ache for you all and are very sorry for your loss.

Mike was my workmate and dear friend here in Tysons Corner, VA . Wonderful, positive outlook on life and bountiful love of his family.
All spirits rose a couple of points when he arrived at his desk; never, ever a sour tone or negative comment. Even got me and my wife to visit the Sourth Port Community for a possible retirement move; lovely place. Mike made a difference in our lives. Has been imissed ever since his farewell here.

Mike was a talented editor and foreign-release specialist who also had a great sense of humor. I had the pleasure of working with him in the Defense Intelligence Agency when we were both at the Pentagon. More than a few times he helped me to laugh at the bureaucracy as we walked the halls with coworkers. But he reserved his biggest smiles for when he mentioned your names. My deepest sympathy on your loss.
