Michael Proffitt Obituary

Michael Landon Proffitt, Architect, died February 10th at Kline Hospice House. Michael was born September 23, 1954 in Frederick, Maryland and was the son of the late Sally Potter Bowers Proffitt and Landon Moore Proffitt, Architect. A graduate of the Virginia Tech School of Architecture, Michael was the principal of Proffitt & Associates Architects, PC, a Frederick architectural and interior design firm founded by Landon in 1973.

A resident of Harpers Ferry, Michael's life was noted for his dedication to his profession, commitment to his community, and devotion to his family. He was an active volunteer and supporter of the Frederick Rescue Mission, Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, Contemporary American Theatre Festival, Downtown Frederick Partnership, Frederick Area Committee for Transportation, St. John's Catholic Preparatory School and the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek. He was an avid sailor who delighted in small craft advisories.

He is survived by Kathryn M. Kuranda; his daughter, Anne M. Proffitt Dean, her husband, Stephen Dean and their children, Katherine Sophia and Elizabeth Rose; his son, Charles M. F. Proffitt, Architect and Erin Quinn; his sisters, Anabel Proffitt and her husband, Chuck Melchert; Amy Proffitt Robinette and her husband Dale B. Robinette and their son, Bradley; and his brother, John S. Proffitt.

Friends and relations are invited to celebrate Michael's life in a memorial service at 2:00 on Saturday, February 25th at the Evangelical Lutheran Church, 31 East Church Street, Frederick. The service will be followed by a reception at the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, 40 South Carroll Street. Interment will be private at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center, Frederick Rescue Mission or Hospice of Frederick County.

As a relatively new member of Rotary l didn't yet know Michael well, but like many, l came to appreciate his welcoming nature and quick smile. I have since learned how much he contributed to the Frederick Community. He set a high standard for us all. God bless.
