Richard Wotthlie Obituary

Richard William Wotthlie Jr., 75, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed away on the morning of the First of November, 2025.

Richard, known as Willie to many, was born on October 18, 1949 to Alverda and Richard Wotthlie in Baltimore, Maryland. He was the youngest of 5 and the only son. His sister Judy was his partner for many childhood adventures and together they loved to spend time with their neighbors. Those friendships grew even stronger throughout his lifetime. Willie played basketball for and graduated from Mount Saint Joe's High School. In high school he met his future wife, Bonnie Harwood, of Mount Airy, Maryland.

Although he grew up in Baltimore, he spent his summers in Mount Airy with his beloved uncle, Dick White. It was during these summers that he fell in love with farming, Bonnie, and the town of Mount Airy.

Willie became a member of the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department as soon as he was old enough. It was at the Fire House that he found a set of loyal and true friends that supported each other through all seasons of life. No matter the hour or weather, he was always willing to go out on calls. He was a dedicated and active member and in his later years worked as a board member. He served as President from 1997 to 1999.

Willie and Bonnie were married in 1970. They were blessed with a son, James William, and a daughter, Katherine Ann. Willie was always supporting his children in their varied interests.

Willie married his favorite person, and his love for her only grew over time. For over fifty years Willie and Bonnie raised their children, farmed, and delighted being with their granddaughter, Morgan Osborn-Wotthlie. They lived a life together filled with love, laughter, and joy.

Willie was a man of charity, though he would have said he was simply being neighborly. If there was a driveway to be plowed, a lawn to be mowed, or Rhebbs candy to be delivered he would be there before being asked. Few knew that he provided Christmas gifts to children in need. He would always make it seem as if the parent or grandparent was doing him a favor for taking these items off his hands. His legacy of caring about his fellow man will be felt by all who had the privilege of sharing his journey.

Willie's steadfastness and strong work ethic served him well in his career. Willie worked for the state of Maryland's Department of Weights and Measures. He started as a field employee testing propane tanks and moved to the position of Chief of Weights and Measures. He started in 1979 and retired in 2010. Dedicated to his craft, he also held the position as treasurer for the National Conference on Weights and Measures. Willie was known for his integrity, fairness, and honesty.

Although Willie eventually retired, that did not stop him from work. After retirement he worked as a personal driver and worked other part time jobs such as assisting with auctions at the Howard County Fairgrounds.

Willie did all of this while maintaining a beautiful small farm in Mount Airy. He was an active member of the farming community, supporting his children and then his granddaughter in the local 4-H program.

There are no events or services planned per Willie's wishes. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Company.

Willie was the best leader Weights and Measures had during my career. He made sure we were the best trained field staff possible.

Sending my sincerest sympathy to the Wotthlie family. I was so shocked to get this sad news. My husband, Gene, worked with Will at the Maryland Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures Section for many years. It always amazed me how close these guys were. They were like brothers to one another. Even after retirement they always made it a point to keep in touch by phone. Will even drove from Mt. Airy to Salisbury for my mother´s funeral back in 2008 out of respect for Gene and me. I have never forgotten how special that made us feel. I last saw Will at Gene´s funeral in April of this year and had the opportunity to chat with him a bit. Little did I know that six months later Will would be called home too. Will will always be remembered as a kind, caring man of true character and integrity who I feel fortunate to have known. May you rest peacefully, Will, until we all meet again in Eternity. God bless all of his family whom he loved so dearly.
