Terry Allen Hershey-a man who brought so much light, laughter, and love into the world, and especially into mine.
There are people who walk into a room and instantly change the energy-Uncle Terry was one of those rare souls. He didn´t just have a smile; he was a smile. Warm, genuine, contagious. The kind of smile that made you feel like everything was going to be okay-even on the hard days. You always knew that if Uncle Terry was around, there´d be laughter not far behind. He was goofy in the best way possible, with a playful spirit and a twinkle in his eye that never seemed to fade.
He had that rare gift of making people feel seen, heard, and valued. He was charismatic-not in a flashy way, but in that magnetic, comforting way that drew people in without them even realizing it. Conversations with him could go from deep and meaningful to hilariously offbeat in seconds, and you never knew what he´d say next-but you always knew it would come from the heart.
Uncle Terry was more than an uncle to me. He was a friend, a role model, and someone I could always count on. Whether we were cracking jokes, watching a game, or just sitting in comfortable silence, he made every moment feel special. He made me feel special-and I know I´m not the only one who felt that way.
What I wouldn´t give for one more hug, one more laugh, one more memory made together. It´s hard to imagine life without him here, making us laugh when we need it most. But I know his spirit-his joy, his kindness, his love-lives on in every one of us who had the privilege of knowing him.
I miss him deeply. We all do. But I take comfort in knowing that love like his doesn´t end-it echoes. It echoes in our memories, our laughter, and in the way we show up for one another. I truly believe I´ll see him again someday. Until then, I´ll carry his smile in my heart.
Uncle Terry, thank you for being the best uncle anyone could ever ask for. You made my life brighter, funnier, and better just by being you. You will always be missed. You will always be loved.
Rest easy, and keep `em laughing up there.
With all my love,
Your nephew,
Ryan Hershey

I already left a message of condolence, but as I have read the other heartwarming (& totally justified) praise of Mr. Hershey, I must add more. He was kind, funny, talented & an expert at teaching in ways that didn´t seem like you were being taught-which went beyond the subject matter and helped shaped the characters of his students. I distinctly recall him standing at the door to his classroom greeting each student by name and making eye contact. He showed his students great respect and seemed genuinely interested in making certain we all felt heard. I wish we´d make more of an effort to tell the living the things we express in tributes once they pass.

My deepest condolences to Mary and the family. I will always remember so many great times as a tennis student of Terry´s as well as working as an instructor with him in Baker Park during the summers. His passion for the game and his fun and easy going attitude led many, like me, to have a lifelong love of tennis. I also will never forget Terry and Mary´s kindness and friendship over the years. He will be greatly missed.

Although I hadn´t been in touch with Terry since our days at Haverford High School, I remember him well as a good friend, a stellar tennis player and a key member of our 49-1 intramural basketball team, which we named Slippery Rock. It´s heartening to read about what a great teacher, coach and mentor he was because those skills were already developing during his teenage years.

I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Mr. Hershey. He was my English teacher at TJ in the 1980s. His enthusiastic, creative teaching style and willingness to be silly to get a concept to stick in our minds has had a lifelong positive impact on me-and, has been the model I have used to help my own child remember concepts. In my mind, I can still see him doing a little razzle dazzle dance & rhyme to explain the parts of speech. He was one of the greats! I am lucky to have known him.

Our deepest sympathies and prayers for peace and comfort to Mary and her family. Norm taught with Terry at Urbana, and Anne Marie had him as a teacher at TJ. Terry gave Anne Marie the confidence that "she could do it," and as a result helped her to fall in love with literature. For Norm, Terry was a consummate professional and a joy to be around; his sense of humor is legendary. He made everyone around him a better teacher and person. He will be missed.
