Dale Hershey died peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026, surrounded by family.

He was born on March 24, 1941 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was predeceased by his parents, Henry E. Hershey and Elizabeth L. Hershey, and his wife, Susanne W. Hershey. He is survived by his children, Lauren Dixon (Michael Rossiter) of Toronto, Canada, and Alex Hershey (Tina Batra Hershey) of Pittsburgh, by his brother Jay Hershey (Penne Fabian) of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and by his grandchildren, Owen, Alaina, Sophie, Hugh, Emma and Stella.

He attended Carrick High School, graduating in 1959, and went on to attend Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, graduating in 1963 with a degree in History. Thereafter, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1966, before returning to Pittsburgh to practice law at Eckert Seamans Cherin and Mellott, LLC, where he was a partner for more than forty years. In 1967, he married Susanne Jarrett Wilson, whom he had met while she was an undergraduate at Radcliffe College, Harvard University, and they were married for 54 years until her passing in 2021.

Professionally, he was a member of and contributor to the activities of the Allegheny County Bar Association and the American Law Institute. In 2001, he began teaching as an Associate Professor of Law at the Carnegie Mellon Tepper School of Business, where he remained Emeritus in his retirement.

He made it a priority to contribute to a just and artistically meaningful society and was active in multiple charitable and civic organizations, serving Gateway To the Arts, Chamber Music Pittsburgh, KidsVoice, Neighborhood Legal Services, the Yale Club of Pittsburgh, the Allegheny HYP Club, the Charleston Trust, and The Junta. He was an avid gardener, traveler, thinker, reader, and historian, specializing throughout his life in Abraham Lincoln and the historical dynamics of the Civil War.

He will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Arrangements by Weddell-Ajak Funeral Home, Aspinwall.
