Thomas Chaney Obituary

Mr. Thomas Monroe Chaney, 75, of Union Bridge, died Sunday, Aug. 8, at Frederick Memorial Hospital, after an extended illness.

He was the husband of Ilene Z. Whitmore Chaney who died in 1976, and Thelma Blodgett Chaney who died in 1998.

Born Jan. 27, 1924, in Frederick County, he was a son of the late Thomas M. Sr. and Betty Stull Chaney, and the stepson of the late Cleora Grimes Chaney.

Mr. Chaney served in the 71st Infantry, Co. B, 44th Division of the U.S. Army during World War II, seeing action in the European theater. He received the Bronze Star and three Combat Bronze stars.

He was a member of VFW Post 8806, Union Bridge.

He was formerly employed at Glenn L. Martin as administrator of operations for 30 years, retiring in 1984.

In March 1998, he became a resident of Glade Valley Nursing and Rehabilitative Center, Walkersville.

Surviving are twin daughters, Betty Gustin and husband Stephen of Orlando, Fla., and Bonnie Ragan of Spring Hill, Fla; one stepsister, Mary Bowman of Middleburg; one stepbrother, Roger Grimes of Littlestown, Pa.; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Spencer W. Chaney.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the funeral home, where memorial services will begin at 8:45 p.m., Tuesday, by VFW Posts 10076 Mount Airy and 8806 Union Bridge.

Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 11, at Hartzler Funeral Home, 6 E. Broadway, Union Bridge. The Rev. Barry Taylor, pastor of Union Bridge United Methodist Church, will officiate.

Interment will be in Prospect Cemetery, Mount Airy.
