William DeLauder Obituary

Dr. William B. DeLauder passed away at 81 years old on May 21, 2019, at Wake Forest Medical Center, Winston Salem, NC. Dr. DeLauder returned to NC after serving 16 years as the president of Delaware State University.

Dr. DeLauder was born and raised in Frederick, MD. He attended Morgan State University where he became a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and graduated with high honors, obtaining a Bachelors in chemistry with a minor in mathematics. He was as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army where he served 4 years. He resigned his commission in 1963 as captain to attend graduate school at Wayne State University, Detroit, MI, where he received a doctorate degree in Physical Chemistry. He received a postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre de Biophysique Moleculaire du C.N.R.S. in France. Dr. DeLauder was the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro before his tenure at Delaware State began in 1987.

Dr DeLauder enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved fishing, photography, sports, the arts, and traveling nationally and internationally. He was a member of the Wilmington chapter of the Boule, a lifetime member of the NAACP, and an honorary member of the Masons. In Delaware, he was a member of Whatcoat UMC in Dover. Later, he attended Westover Church in Greensboro, NC.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Vermell; sisters, Barbara Butler and Delores DeLauder; daughter, Ellen Jenkins (Don); sons, William DeLauder Jr. (Saundra) and William Jenkins (Lily); grandchildren, Morgan Jenkins, Mia Jenkins, Kellie Jenkins, Danielle Jenkins, and Rachel DeLauder; great grandchildren, Kamyia Ford and Aydan Reid; sister-in-law, Agnes Monroe; brother-in-law, Willie Faulk (Hattie); and a host of loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Dr. DeLauder was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Ralph DeLauder; sister, Sherree Redman; brothers, Oliver Whiten and William Ralph Weedon; daughter, Sonja Jenkins; and brothers-in-law, Peter Redman and JS (Joe) Butler.

Funeral services will be held at Jackson Chapel United Methodist Church, 5609 Ballenger Creek Pike, Frederick, MD on Sat., June 8, 2019 at 12:00 p.m. A public viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to noon. Interment is at Fairview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the William B. DeLauder Endowed Scholarship Fund are kindly appreciated. Vermell and the Delauder family, My prayers go out to everyone at this difficult time. Cousin Bill will truly be missed and never forgotten. Cherish all the great memories and find strength in each always. Bill was a great man and left a wonderful impression on everyone he came in contact with his knowledge and wisdom he always was there to help everyone and will be missed by many.
