A funeral for retired Army Lt. Gen. Andrew J. Boyle, 89, of Culpeper will be held at 11 a.m. today at Little Fork Episcopal Church. Burial will follow in Little Fork Burying Grounds with military honors.
Mr. Boyle died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Culpeper Health Care Center.
Born in Braddock, Pa., he was raised and educated in Baltimore.
A 1935 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he was commissioned a second lieutenant of Cavalry. While stationed at Fort Meyer in 1940, he and his wife, Elaine Boyle, bought the Norris Farm at Mitchells.
His 35-year military career took him to overseas assignments in England, Germany, Laos, Korea and Turkey, as well as many posts in the United States and Hawaii. He was one of a few general officers selected to command two corps during a career.
His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Belgian Croix de Guerre, Belgian L'Ordre de Leopold, Norwegian Cross and Korean Bokuk Kuksunjang.
After his retirement in 1970, he settled on his farm at Michells and managed a beef herd.
Active in the local community, he served as first chairman of the Culpeper Planning Commission, was president of the Mitchells Ruritan Club and on boards of directors for Culpeper Regional Hospital and Piedmont Environmental Council.
Gen. Boyle was instrumental in the restoration of historic Little Fork Episcopal Church in Culpeper County, and establishing the burying ground. He oversaw its preservation by serving as chairman of its building and grounds committee.
Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, Andrew J. Boyle Jr.; and two granddaughters.
