Brian Hyland
James Brian Hyland, 64, of Fredericksburg died Friday, Nov. 15, 2002, at Mary Washington Hospital after a lengthy fight with diabetes.
Born in White Plains, N.Y., Mr. Hyland served his country in federal law enforcement for 28 years.
Mr. Hyland graduated from Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains, N.Y. He was a graduate of Fordham University and received his MBA from George Washington University in 1972. He was a CPA with Ernst and Ernst for three years before becoming a special agent for the FBI. Mr. Hyland then served as director of the Surveys and Investigations Staff with the House Appropriations Committee. He returned to work for the FBI as an inspector, leaving in 1979 to become the deputy inspector general of NASA.
Ronald Reagan selected him as the inspector general of the Labor Department in 1983. He continued in this position under President Bush until 1990. He then served on several presidential commissions, including the commission which looked into the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.
Mr. Hyland was also the owner of two popular downtown Fredericksburg establishments.
Survivors include his wife, Sally C. Hyland; three sons, Brian Hyland, Bob Hyland and Jack Hyland, all of Fredericksburg; one daughter, Jill Iannetta of White Plains, N.Y.; one grandson, Conor Hyland of Fredericksburg; one brother, Bob Hyland of White Plains, N.Y.; and one sister, Margaret Hyland of Burlington, N.J. He was preceded in death by one sister, Maryanne Stancari.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. Interment will be in White Plains, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 18, and from noon until the service time on Tuesday, Nov. 19, at the funeral home.
