Elizabeth Broughton Obituary

Elizabeth Broughton

Elizabeth Broughton, 90, formerly of Fredericksburg, left us to join her beloved husband, Henry, on Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton, Wash., after a brief illness.

She was born in Bloxom, Va., and was the daughter of Stanley and Mae Bloxom Lewis. She attended Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Mary Washington in 1942. She then began a 33-year teaching career, first in Newport News, then Fredericksburg. She earned a master's degree in Education from the University of Virginia in 1973, at the age of 53, then became a guidance counselor in Loudoun County.

She met her husband, Henry Willis Broughton, in Newport News. They were married on July 5, 1947, and their marriage lasted 61 years, until Henry's death in 2008.

Elizabeth and Henry travelled extensively in Europe and North America after their retirements in the 1970s. They moved from Virginia to Bremerton in 1987, in order to spend more time with their grandchildren.

Elizabeth did volunteer work helping children to learn to read. She was an active member of the Silverdale Lutheran Church, and she and Henry were members of the Oslo Lodge of the Sons of Norway. She was an avid gardener, reader and grandmother. She lived at Canterbury Manor the last few years of her life.

Elizabeth was predeceased by Henry and her sisters, Violet and Nancy. She was survived by her sons, Robert Stanley Broughton, of New Westminster, British Columbia, and William Henry Broughton, an attorney in Bremerton; and her three grandchildren, Darcy Eileen Broughton, a medical student at Brown University, Jacqueline Clouter, a graduate of the University of Oregon, and Michael Reed Broughton, an undergraduate at Western Washington University.

A memorial service will be held at Silverdale Lutheran Church in Bremerton, Wash., on Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. Memorials may be given to Silverdale Lutheran Preschool.
