Elizabeth Hooe Obituary

Elizabeth Finney Hooe

Dearly loved, Elizabeth Finney Hooe, who was known as Liz to all who knew her, was granted her angel wings on March 30, 2022, with her loving daughter by her side in Punta Gorda, Fl. She was 86 years young at heart and passed peacefully.

She was born July 1,1935, in Fredericksburg, VA to Garland G. Finney and Doris Alsop Finney. Her father was a lifelong mail carrier in the Spotsylvania County, VA. Her mother passed away at a young age. She married her high school/college sweetheart, Hansbrough "Dike" H. Hooe, Jr. and never remarried after he passed July 1977 at 46 years of age. They were both heavily involved with the Fredericksburg community, which they adored. Their residency on Lorraine Ave. was a small and loving neighborhood with lots of young families and children. They had two children, 6 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.

Elizabeth had a lifelong career as an insurance agent starting at a young age at Walter N. Chinn Insurance. After many years there, she worked at several agencies, American Insurance Agency, Cox Insurance, Bobby Washington Insurance and managed several other companies during her tenure. She enjoyed assisting everyone, loved her career and anyone she could help.

Elizabeth could accomplish anything she set her mind to do. She purchased property on the Potomac River and renovated a small cottage into a family gathering retreat. She loved living on the water and cooking on weekends for family and friends. Upon retirement, Elizabeth travelled visiting friends, cruising with friends, and lots of family time. She acquired a passion of boating on the Potomac River and was often enjoying life on the water. She was well known here and very active with friends and neighbors at Marlborough Point, they were always over or she was visiting with them.

She graduated from Spotsylvania High School in 1952, and she hosted her 45th class reunion at her cottage. While in high school, she was Head Cheerleader, Spring Festival May Queen, secretary of her Sr. class, Sr. class honor roll, Who's Who's Wittiest, Glee Club, Latin Club, Quill and Scroll, President FBLA, secretary of the Athletic Association, and played varsity softball and field hockey. She remained in touch with her classmates and just received an announcement for their 70th class reunion. As her senior superlative stated, "Loveable, laughable, witty and gay; truly an asset in every way".

She moved to SWFL in 2009 to enjoy the sun and fun and live with her daughter and husband. Elizabeth loved visits from her son, grandchildren and seeing photos of her great grandchildren. Trivia became a true love of hers as she enjoyed playing.

Elizabeth is survived by her two children, Gregory Stephen (Cathy) Hooe, Anne Kelly (Robert) Watts: six grandchildren John Gray Bynum (deceased), Garrett (Laura) Hooe, Caitlin (Mike) Porada, Dylan (Sarah) Hooe, Wills (Maria) Hooe, and Ann (SW) Dawson; six great grandchildren Taeden Bynum, Christian Porada, Caroline Porada, Eleanor Porada, Henry Hooe, Lillybeth Hooe; and several great nieces Shaw Ward Atchison, Beth Ward Tobias, Jeni Finney Guidi, and Ashley Finney Conkey.

She was preceded in death by her brother William G. Finney.

A private family ceremony will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.

I have wonderful memories of my special friend She and I were like sisters in high school. She was always happy and upbeat. I loved hanging out with her. She was a dear friend later in life also. We didn´t get to see each other in the last years but she was on my mind and in my heart. Rest In Peace Elizabeth.

Please accept our heartfelt condolences for the loss of Liz. I was very interested when I saw she was married to Hooe. I am descended from that family here in King George Va and would be interested to learn more. My email is [email protected]. There is recent news about the Hooe Family who resided at the Virginia landing of the US 301 bridge at a farm called Barnesfield. Would to to chat with possible relatives. Again, we send our prayers for the celebration of Liz and Dike Hooe. Stuart
