Florence A. Self
Florence A. Self, 95, a longtime resident of Ferry Farms subdivision in Stafford County, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was the widow of Samuel H. Self Sr.
Mrs. Self was born on the Fourth of July and raised in Dinwiddie County. She attended Virginia Tech at a time when few women were enrolled and played on the women's basketball team.
During the Roosevelt administration, she worked with the relocation program resulting in construction of the Skyline Drive. In addition to supporting her family, she was active in TOPS International, the Home Demonstration Club, Fredericksburg United Methodist Church and the Order of Eastern Star. She also was a substitute teacher and was involved in many other community activities.
She is survived by three children, Samuel H. Self Jr. and his wife, Judy, of Gore, Marvin Y. Self and his wife, Barbara, of Fredericksburg, and Rebecca K. Self of Raleigh, N.C.; one sister, Dimmie A. Wilks of Olney, Md.; three grandchildren, Brian P. Self, Heather L. Self and Nathan W. Self; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m. at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel. A funeral will follow immediately at 11:30 a.m., conducted by the Rev. Victor Gomez and the Rev. Jay Luther. Interment will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
