Jason Evans Carlson
Jason Evans Carlson, 55, of Fredericksburg, Virginia, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2025, after a sudden and brief illness at Mary Washington Hospital.
Jason earned his B.S. and Master's Degree in International Sports Management from George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, and pursued his love of golf through a career in golf course management. He grew up in San Diego and graduated from University City High School in San Diego, CA. He had a lifelong love of sports and excelled at every one he played: baseball, soccer, tennis, surfing, and golf. His favorite surfing spot was La Jolla Shores in La Jolla, CA, and his favorite golf course was Torrey Pines Golf Course, also in La Jolla. He was a lifelong San Diego Padres fan and also became a loyal New York Mets fan, sticking with them even through their toughest seasons.
Jason also had a deep love of music, inspired by his father, musician Evans J. "EJ" Carlson, who was a member of the band "Kirk Bates", a standing musical act at The Palais 500 in San Diego. He enjoyed stand-up comedy and was known for his spot-on impressions of famous comedians. Rodney Dangerfield was his favorite, and Jason often spotted him walking along the beach at La Jolla Shores. Blessed with both intelligence and charisma, Jason was often described as "the funniest guy in the room," always keeping those around him laughing. He was equally devoted to lifelong learning, research, and education.
Jason is survived by his mother, Susan Forehand Carlson of Fredericksburg, VA, who served for 22 years as Legislative Aide to retired Congressman Bob Michel in Washington, DC. In 1970 after moving from Virginia to San Diego, Susan Carlson worked for C. Arnholt Smith ("Mr. San Diego"), President of Westgate-California Corp. and U.S. National Bank. Jason is also survived by his uncle, Dell Forehand of Richmond, VA; his aunts, Martha Rust of Pinehurst, NC, Bette Kelsea of North Conway, NH, and Dolores Forehand of Waverly, NY; his cousin, Melissa Brock of Apalachin, NY; and his uncle, T. Fordyce Carlson of Columbia, SC. He will also be remembered by many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Evans J. "EJ" Carlson; his great-grandfather, USMC Brigadier General Evans F. Carlson of "Carlson's Raiders," WWII; his grandfather, USMC Col. Evans C. Carlson; his grandmother, Clara Thompson Forehand of Fairfax, VA; his uncles, Jay Lemuel Forehand II of Fairfax, VA and Frederic Forehand of Waverly, NY; and his dear aunt, Geni Case of Fairfax, VA.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held in Fredericksburg, VA, at a later date. Now in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jason will be deeply missed.
