Ludwell Smither
Ludwell Fitzhugh Lee Smither, 85, a resident of Essex County for 21 years, died Monday, July 8, 2002.
Mr. Smither, the son of the late Lucy Sthresley and Charles Lewis Smither, was a native of Stafford County, but at an early age moved with his family to Washington, D.C., where he received his education. Both before and after World War II, he was employed by the Lawrence Paint Co., later known as the Pittsburgh Paint Co., as a sales representative. During the war he served as a staff sergeant in the Army Air Corps in England, France and Germany, and was awarded the bronze star for meritorious service.
After retirement to Tappahannock from Bethesda, Md., Mr. Smither became active in community affairs, serving the local American Legion Post in various capacities and acting as treasurer of the Essex County Historical Society for 19 years. In addition, he served as a docent for the Essex County Museum and was a member of the King and Queen Historical Society and the Tappahannock Men's Club. Never one to be idle, Mr. Smither worked during his retirement years as a part-time salesman for the Martin-Sale Furniture Co.
Mr. Smither was a joint member and deacon of National City Christian Church, Washington, and of Rappahannock Christian Church, Dunnsville.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Elizabeth Bomar Smither; a sister, Marian Alexander Smither; and a nephew, George Terrill Brumback Jr.
A funeral will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Rappahannock Christian Church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at the residence.
Pallbearers will be Leon Wright, Robert Wassman, E. Macon Ware Jr., Harold Post, Scott Pierce and Alexander F. Dillard Jr.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rappahannock Christian Church Restoration Fund; or to the Essex County Museum.
Marks-Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock, is handling arrangements.
