Ralph Metts Obituary

Ralph Metts

Ralph Metts, 91, of Stafford, passed away on Monday, July 22, 2024. Born August 4, 1932, in rural Georgia, he was a Future Farmer of America, but decided early on that farm life wasn't for him. After service to his country in the United States Air Force, he moved his growing family to Stafford. There he pursued a career in land development and public service.

Ralph was a large man who lived a life of service to his country, his community, but first and foremost to his family. There were many vacations, crab boils, and Christmas parties. He was known for his barbecue and parties that were often served with a side of his wit and wisdom, as well as a cold cocktail and cigar. As a member of the Stafford County Board of Supervisors in the 1960's and 1970's, he was most proud of building the first water treatment plant and expanding the public school system, among many other projects.

Ralph lived a long successful life as an entrepreneur. He leaves behind his daughters, Kathy, Terry, and Vicky; his son, Keith; sons-in-law, Karl and Chuck; his grandsons, Alex Miller and Jason Metts; his great-grandchildren, Scarlet, Ethan, and Eliza; his brother, Thomas Metts, and wife, Judy; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ronnie Metts; his brother, Donald Metts; his grandson, Willie Conner; and wife, Muriel Metts. Ralph leaves behind many people who were touched by his large personality and abundant stories. He will be missed by many. Special thanks from Kathy for the loving care that her sister, Terry, and husband, Karl, gave to him for the last four years. The happy hours were shorter and the wine glass less full, but the care and love were the fullest.

A celebration of life will be held on a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the American Kidney Fund at kidneyfund.org.

Even though I only got to know Ralph in the last few years when he moved back to Stafford with Terry and Karl, I will always remember our colorful discussions when I would ask my endless questions about the history of Stafford County; the happy hours; the holiday get-togthers, no holiday too big or small to celebrate; the impromptu get-togethers on the deck; the Stars & Stripes; the laughs and jokes and fun times. And I will always remember the coconut macaroons and the bobbleheads.

Memories are forever and some of the best things one can leave behind. Thanks for the memories, Ralph.

Ralph, his family and my dad, H. Ryland Heflin, contributed so much to their beloved Stafford County. Many fond memories of the Metts' family.
