It is with tremendous sadness that the family of Dick Govoni announces his passing on Sunday, March 11, 2018, in Spotsylvania, at the age of 88 years. Richard will be deeply missed and forever remembered by his beloved wife of nearly 61 years, Marguerite; their children, Sharon Brunacci, Lisa Stead and Rick Govoni. He will also be fondly remembered by his five grandchildren, Justin, Ashley, Nicholas, and Allyson Brunacci, and Alex Stead; great-grandson Emmet Thompson; sons-in-law Graham Stead and Greg Brunacci; daughter-in-law Carol Govoni; grandson-in-law Jacob Thompson; and brothers Donald Govoni and John Govoni. Richard, known as Dick to his family, friends and co-workers, was an American proud to serve his country in wartime and peace. Dick achieved his dream by becoming a Marine Aviator flying helicopters, jets, and propeller aircraft. Highlights of his career include a Presidential Unit Commendation, and flying helicopters for the movie, "The Green Berets," where he met one of his heroes, John Wayne. After retiring from the Marine Corps in 1972, with the rank of Major, he continued to serve the Department of the Navy and Marine Corps as a civil servant until his retirement with a combined service of over 65 years. Upon retirement, the Commandant of the Marine Corps personally bestowed upon him the highest civilian service award a Commandant may provide, The Navy Superior Civilian Service Award. A brief history of his active duty flying years is available at www. DickGovoni.com. In his personal life, he was an active church member, volunteer, and deeply valued his Catholic faith. He also loved to laugh, joke, and make others smile. When out in public we were never sure who would warm up to his smile and start talking to us. Dick's willingness to help others and his easy manner will be missed by all. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 18 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg with a prayer service at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 19 at St. Matthew Catholic Church, Spotsylvania County. Interment will follow at 1 p.m. at Quantico National Cemetery with military honors. Online guestbook at covenantfuneralservice.com.

Dick was not only my co-worker but a friend who brought so many interesting memories of our time at Marine Corps Systems Command. He was a wealth of information and a helper for anyone who needed it. I will miss his wit!
