Herbert Nebgen Obituary

Herbert Paul "Herb" Nebgen, of Stonewall, passed away on Monday, Sept. 5, 2022, at the age of 85 years.

Herb was born Aug. 22, 1937, in Stonewall, Texas, the 10th child of Albert and Bertha Nebgen. Herb graduated from St. Mary's High School in 1956. He joined the Air Force after high school and served four years.

Herb married Patricia "Pat" Gellermann on July 4th, 1970, in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. They were married for 52 years.

Herb's first job out of the service was working for Weinheimer & Son where he worked as a grocery clerk for 15 years. He then began working at Allied Ag as a custom fertilizer applicator. He worked for Allied Ag for 27 years.

Community was important to Herb, and he volunteered and served on numerous boards throughout his lifetime. He volunteered with the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department for almost 50 years, and he served on the Stonewall Water Control and Improvement District for 28 years. He also volunteered with the Stonewall Chamber of Commerce for over 40 years and served on their board of directors and as president. During his spare time, he loved to fish and was a peach grower with over 100 trees at one time. After the peach trees were removed, he still used the fields to grow hay and contribute to the ag industry.

Herb is survived by his wife, Patricia Gellermann Nebgen of Stonewall; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Jeff Nebgen and Greg and Shea Nebgen of Fredericksburg. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Justin Nebgen (Cassidy Coons - girlfriend), Daylon Nebgen (Marcella Lancon - fiancé) and Karlie Nebgen.

Herb is survived by one brother, one sister, James Nebgen of Oklahoma City and Alice "Puddle" Grohman of Austin. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Estella Nebgen, and brother-in-law, Theo Hiesser.

He is preceded in death by his parents Albert and Bertha Nebgen and immediate family members, including Marcus and Bessie Nebgen, Meta Nebgen, Annie Nebgen, Leo Nebgen, Hilmar and Betty Nebgen, Andrew and Jane Nebgen, Evelyn Hiesser, Richard Grohman and Louise Nebgen.

A Mass of Resurrection was celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Thursday, Sept. 8, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Stonewall, with the Rev. John Nolan officiating.

Deann Hampton was the pianist, and Amy Voorhees, the vocalist. Scripture readers were Shea Nebgen and Karlie Nebgen.

The Eucharistic gifts were presented by his grandchildren, Justin Nebgen, Daylon Nebgen and Karlie Nebgen.

Graveside services and interment, with military honors, followed in the Stonewall Community Cemetery.

Pallbearers included Justin Nebgen, Daylon Nebgen, Gary Nebgen, Mark Nebgen, David Mills and Terry Behrends.

Honorary pallbearers included Jimmy Duecker, Lester Staudt, Wayne Petsch, Daniel Pehl, Nebgen nephews, Gordon Klein, William Deike and members of the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department.

Visitation and a vigil service were held Wednesday evening, Sept. 7, in the chapel of Schaetter Funeral Home, Fredericksburg.

For those who so desire, you may make memorial contributions in his memory to the Stonewall Volunteer Fire Department, Stonewall Community Cemetery, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church or to the charity of your choice.
