Richard Lobenthal Obituary
Richard 7/29/34 - 9/26/17 Richard Lobenthal died peacefully after courageously battling a long illness, on September 26, 2017. Richard lobenthal, beloved husband of Dr. Judith Kovach, father of Joshua Lobenthal, (deceased), Adam Lobenthal (Jackie), Lisabeth Lobenthal (Pat Thomi), and Debbie Kovach (deceased). Grandfather of Aaron, Sarah, Ruth, James, Jamie, Joseph, and Michaela. Great-Grandfather of Obadyah, Okira, Orianna, Cassidy, Laylah, Owin, and Parker. Richard spent his life fighting against intolerance. He was committed to fighting for social justice and defending constitutional rights for all people and protecting the rights of minorities. He was the Michigan Director of the Anti-Defamation League of B'nai B'rith (ADL) from 1964-1996. He was also the Mid-West Regional Director of ADL and the interim Director of the Michigan chapter of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) after his retirement from ADL. Richard also served as the interim Director and President of the Board of the Ecumenical Council of Detroit. He served on the Boards of the following organizations: The National Association of Independent Artists and the Michigan Psychological Association Foundation. He was a professor of Sociology at Wayne State University and had a weekly radio broadcast for over 20 years on Detroit Public Radio (WDET). Services will be held at the Ira Kaufman Chapel on Thursday, September 28th at 4:30PM. 18325 West Nine Mile Road; Southfield, MI 48075. Contributions in Richard's honor can be made to the Anti-Defamation League: 23 United Nations Plaza; New York, NY 10017, or to the American Civil Liberties Union, ACLU Michigan; 2966 Woodward Avenue; Detroit, MI 48201.

Richard was a very brave man during his illness. I truly respected him and was delighted with the relationship he had with his beautiful wife Judith. A true loss in this world, Richard touched so many lives and he will be missed. Your Beaumont Nurse...Debbie
