Susan Thoits Obituary

Susan Murray Thoits

Susan Murray Thoits, 96, went to bed November 16 full of life and faith and died in her sleep. She was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. After graduating from Grand Rapids Central High School, she graduated from Connecticut College (Go Camels!). Raising her sons and practicing her faith provided a lifelong road map. She never missed a school or sporting event in which her local grandchildren participated. She was an avid bridge player, playing in marathons and duplicate bridge at Kent Country Club for many years. It was also at Kent Country Club that she honed her tennis and golf skills which she enjoyed into her 80s. She keenly looked forward to the weekly bridge game at Cook Valley and was thrilled to play bridge with grandchildren this summer, which she thought helped her survive the pandemic shutdown. She volunteered many hours through the Sideboard Guild at Blodgett Hospital and delivered Meals on Wheels for decades. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Thoits, parents Raymond and Marjorie (Evans) Murray, sisters Cynthia (Thomas) Jack, Nancy (John) Roberts. She is survived by her sons David (Gaby) Thoits of Claremont CA, Michael (Diane) Thoits of Grosse Pointe Woods, Jonathan (Janet) Thoits of Grand Rapids, Timothy (Jeannie) Thoits of Grand Rapids; grandchildren Chris (Staci) Thoits, Tom (Corina) Thoits, Joe (Drea) Thoits, Phil (Sara) Thoits, Bobby (Dani) Thoits, Yvonne Thoits, Alex Thoits, Katie Thoits, Annie Thoits, Lauren (Caitlin) Bentley, Brandon (Megan) Bentley, Tom (Nicole) Pare, Emily (Dan) Pelech, Kimberley Pare, Sam Pare; sister-in-law Mary Thoits, 16 great grandchildren, 6 great, great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews. A service will be held in 2021 once the COVID pandemic has resolved. Donations may be made to Meals on Wheels of Western Michigan.

Sue was a legend both to the community and also to our family. Her gentle, wise, and loving council served the McPhee girls well and she was a wonderful friend to our parents in our younger days. All I can think of is this quote: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith”. A life well lived, RIP, Sue
