The funeral for Elden D. Svec, DVM, 76, of Scribner will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Scribner.
He died Thursday Aug. 3, 2006, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
He was born March 22, 1930, at the family farmhouse near Schuyler to James and Tillie (Pokorny) Svec. He graduated from Schuyler High School in 1947. He stayed at home and continued to work on the family farm until 1951, then served in the U.S. Navy until 1955. He graduated from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 1959 with a degree in animal science and graduated from Oklahoma State University Veterinary School in 1963. He married Mary Ann Dillon on Aug. 26, 1958, in Stanton. They started their family while in Stillwater, Okla., at Oklahoma State University. Mark was born in 1959, Larry in 1961 and Duane in 1962. They moved to Scribner, where he started his veterinary practice. Roger was born in 1964, Patrick in 1967 and Eugene in 1970.
Svec and his family were members of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Scribner. He was an active member of the community and attended many school and local events. He enjoyed watching his sons, grandchildren, nieces and nephews in their activities. From 1989 to 2005, eleven grandchildren were born. On July 18, 2006, Elden checked in to Methodist Hospital in Omaha. On July 27, he was diagnosed with cancer. His family brought him home to Scribner for a memorable family weekend. He checked back into Methodist Hospital on July 31 and died peacefully Aug. 3 surrounded by his wife, sons and daughters-in-law.
Survivors include: his wife, Mary Ann of Scribner; six sons, Mark (and wife, Barb) Svec of West Point, Larry Svec of Lincoln, Duane (and wife, Angie) Svec of Elkhorn, Roger (and wife, Lisa) Svec of Dakota Dunes, S.D., Patrick Svec of Verdigre, and Eugene (and wife, Kristi) Svec of Kearney; three brothers, Dennis (and wife, Julie) of Rogers, Rolland (and wife, Magdeline) Svec of Rogers and Leroy (and wife, Patricia) Svec of Seward; a sister, Gladys (Mrs. William) Romo of Ottawa, Canada; grandchildren, Nicole and Trevor, both of Elkhorn, Dillon, Sydney and Carter, all of Lincoln, Austin, Claire and Noah, all of Dakota Dunes, S.D., and Nathan, Jacob and Jordyn, all of Kearney; two brothers-in-law, Robert (and wife, Beverly) Dillon of Cary, N.C. and William (and wife, Vicki) Dillon of Springfield; four sisters-in-law, Roberta (Mrs. Gilbert) Morfeld of Stanton, Ellen Osborn of Scribner, Jean Howard of Omaha and Rita (Mrs. John) Olin of Paonia, Colo.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Sunday, with family receiving friends 6-8 p.m., at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Scribner. A vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, also at the church. Burial will be in Scribner Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Lawrence Catholic Church or Scribner-Snyder Schools.
