The funeral for Elmer J. Banks, 77, of Fremont will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Fremont.
He died Wednesday, Dec. 26, 2007, in his apartment in Stanton Tower in Fremont.
He was born July 28, 1930, in Orleans to Elmer M. and Myrtle H. Foskett Banks. Elmer came to Fremont in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1951 to February 1953. Elmer had received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.
He married Evelyn L. Long on Aug. 18, 1957, at First Baptist Church in Fremont with the Rev. Harold Shaw officiating. They celebrated their 50th anniversary this past August.
Elmer was a retired machinist, having retired from Valmont Industries after 22 years there.
He was a member of First Baptist Church where he had served on the Diaconate, and also had served as an usher. Elmer initiated the serving of communion to the shut-in members of his church. Other memberships included the Fremont Eagles Aerie 200, American Legion Post 20, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854, the Fremont Masonic Lodge No. 15 A. F. & A.M., Fremont York Rite Masonic Bodies and Arbor Vitae Chapter 92 Order of Eastern Star.
Survivors include: his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Deborah Stonehocker and Sarah (and husband, Shayne) Schiermeister, all of Fremont; a son, Martin Banks of Fremont; eight grandchildren, including Monica whom they raised; and four great-grandchildren.
Elmer was preceded in death by a son, James Allen Banks; and two sisters, Ruth Schwartz and Bertha Jacobs.
The Revs. Leland Foreman, Walter Hickman and Richard Holmen will officiate Saturday's service. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. today at Ludvigsen Mortuary in Fremont with family receiving friends from 6:30-8 p.m. Burial will be in Ridge Cemetery in Fremont. Military honors will be rendered by the Fremont Honor Guard of American Legion Post 20 and VFW Post 854.
Memorials are suggested to First Baptist Church.
