Harold Beck, 94, of rural Snyder died Friday, Dec. 31, 2010, at Nye Square in Fremont.
Harold John Alvin Beck was born Nov. 1, 1916, in rural Snyder to Julius and Amelia "Emilie" (Niemeier) Beck. He was baptized on Nov. 30, 1916, by Rev. Carl Hoffmann at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Snyder. He attended Dodge County Rural School District 41 through the fifth grade. The family moved to Fremont where he attended Trinity Lutheran School for seventh and eighth grades and Fremont High School. He was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont on April 13, 1930, by Rev. William Brueggeman. The family returned to the family farm near Snyder in 1932. In 1938, Harold purchased his first farm. On May 29, 1940, he was united in marriage to Ruth Metschke by Rev. Paul Weinhold at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Snyder. He continued farming and remained on that same farm for 72 years until May 2010 when he moved to Fremont.
He was a former member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Snyder and had served as council secretary for many years and sang in the church choir. Harold was currently a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. He was one of the founders of the Snyder AA Chapter.
Survivors include: his children and their families, Janet (and husband, Richard) Kirch of Fremont, Marilyn (and husband, James) Hoover of Louisville and Wayne (and wife, Marcia) Beck of Dodge; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, John Beck of Snyder.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Amelia Beck; stepmother, Alma Beck; his wife, Ruth Beck; granddaughter, Laura Beck, and a brother in infancy; and sister-in-law, Agnes Beck.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in West Point. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Kuzelka-Minnick Funeral Home in West Point with the family present from 6-8 p.m. and a public prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
