The funeral for James D. Lutes, 74, of Billings, Mo., formerly of Scribner, will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Lutheran Church in Scribner.
He died Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, in Billings.
Lutes was born March 23, 1929, on the family farm outside of Hebron to William B. and Cora Mae (Cloud) Lutes. He lived in rural Thayer County and attended District 33 School. He graduated from Hebron High School in 1946 and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agriculture in 1951 with a bachelor's degree in vocational education. He served as state FFA president his freshman year. He also was a member of Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Following his graduation, he served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952-54. He married Carolyn Harvey in 1950, and to this union five children were born. He was the agricultural mortgage loan representative for Travelers Insurance Co. for five years. He joined First National Bank of Kearney in 1961 where he served as vice president. In April 1966, he moved to Scribner with his family where he was named the executive vice president of Scribner Bank. He was promoted to president in 1970. In 1974, he and a group of associates purchased controlling interest in the Scribner Bank. He served as president until his retirement in 1994 and continued to serve as chairman of the board until his death.
He married Lou Quattrocchi on June 21, 1991, at United Lutheran Church in Scribner. Upon his retirement in 1994, they moved to Billings where they were able to participate in numerous hobbies, including fishing, gardening, bird watching and growing and designing bird house gourds.
He was a member of United Lutheran Church in Scribner and served on the church board for several years. He was active in the community and served on numerous boards and committees. He was active in the banking community, having served as Nebraska Electronic Transfer Systems president from 1980-82, and was a member of the Nebraska Bankers Association since 1961, having served on the executive council from 1974-77. He was a member of the Scribner Chamber of Commerce since 1966, having served two terms as president and also held other offices throughout the years. He was a member of Scribner American Legion Post 121, having served as post commander in the past. He was active in the Scribner Economic Development Committee and Scribner Medical Committee. He was active in the Dodge County Cattle Feeders Association and served as the chairman of the Scribner Centennial Committee. He was the announcer at Scribner High School football games and coached youth baseball for many years. He helped sponsor the youth girls softball program for many years and coached them in his younger years. He was honored in 1988 by the Scribner Jaycees with the "Boss of the Year" award.
Survivors include: his wife, Lou of Billings; three daughters, Cathie Anderson of Oakland, Nancy (Mrs. Gene) Poppe of West Plains, Mo., and Mary (Mrs. Greg) Brown of Omaha; two sons, Steve (and wife, Kris) of Little Falls, Minn., and Stan (and wife, Kris) of Ankeny, Iowa; two stepchildren, LouAnn (Mrs. Ray) Frizzell of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Frank Quattrocchi of Columbia, Mo.; two brothers, Bill (and wife, Kay) Lutes of Lincoln and Bob of Springfield, Mo.; a sister, Jessie West of York; 12 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Judd and Benjamin, and a son-in-law, Jerry Anderson.
The Rev. Nikki McIntyre will officiate Tuesday's service. Visitation will be from 3-9 p.m. today at Spear-Johnson Funeral Home in Scribner with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Visitation will continue from 12:30 p.m. to service time at the church. Burial will be in Scribner Cemetery with military rites by Scribner American Legion Post 121 of Scribner.
Pallbearers will be Brad Poppe, Joe Anderson, BJ Poppe, Scott Anderson, Tim Anderson, Josh Wolfe, Doug Anderson, Dan Anderson and Jake Wolfe.
Memorials have been established to United Lutheran Church and the Jim Lutes Educational Scholarship Fund.
