John Brahmsteadt Obituary

John W. Brahmsteadt, 65, of Pilger died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Faith Regional Health Services in Norfolk.

Brahmsteadt was born Sept. 3, 1938, in York. He attended St. Paul Lutheran School and graduated from Thayer High School in 1957. He entered the U.S. Air Force and served in the Vietnam War. After being discharged from the service in 1961, he returned to York. He was employed as a mechanic at Shorty's Gas Station and other locations in York. He married Judy Pitt on Jan. 11, 1964, in Thayer. They moved onto the family farm near Thayer. The family moved to Gresham where he was a partner with Allan Farley in a horse processing plant. In 1970, the family moved to Pilger, where he helped with the John Goeller farming operation. He was later employed by Cornhusker Pork of Pilger, the Stanton County Roads Department and later owned and operated a bar called JB's Office in Pilger. He also owned and operated his own long haul truck, which he drove until he was forced to retire due to health concerns.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Pilger, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3602 of Stanton, was an ABATE member and had formerly served on the Pilger Volunteer Fire Department. While in Gresham, he had belonged to the Gresham Jaycee's Club.

Survivors include: his wife; two sons, Bruce (and wife, Peggy) Brahmsteadt of Dodge and Curtis (and wife, Kim) Brahmsteadt of Pender; three daughters, Becky Neuhalfen (and companion, Robert Peterson), Tracey (Mrs. Samuel) Welch and Johnana (Mrs. Mark) Peterson, all of Pilger; two brothers, Robert (and wife, Linda) Brahmsteadt of York and Roland (and wife, Joyce) Brahmsteadt of Spokane, Wash.; a sister, Marlene (Mrs. Howard) Freisen of York; his mother-in-law, Vera Russian of Gainesville, Mo.; 13 grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepgrandson.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Pilger with the Rev. Jeffrey Bloom officiating. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. today at Kuzelka-Minnick Funeral Home in Pilger and will continue from 9 a.m. to service time at the church. Burial will be in Pilger Cemetery with military rites by Stanton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3602.
