Robert Colhouer Obituary

Robert Lee Colhouer

September 13, 1950 - August 11, 2025

Robert Lee Colhouer, 74, of Fremont, Neb. passed away on Monday, August 11, 2025 at Nye Legacy.

Robert (Bob) was born at Fort Sam Houston, Texas on September 13, 1950 to James and Virginia (Parkert) Colhouer. He moved with his parents first to Ralston, Neb., and then to Newman Grove, Neb., where he graduated from Newman Grove High School in 1968. Bob attended Kearney State College from 1968 to 1971, where he majored in extracurricular activities, before moving to Hooper, Nebraska. Some of his favorite memories growing up were made at his grandparents' farm in Hooper by the Elkhorn River. Bob was married in Hooper in 1974 and divorced in 1987, eventually moving to Fremont, where he lived until his death.

A truck driver all his life, first long haul with his own truck and later working for local freight companies, Bob hauled everything from Zimmatic pivots to Christmas trees, even hogs. He drove through and stopped in just about every state in the country at one time or another, often taking his children with him on the road when able. Bob enjoyed playing and watching golf and having cocktails with his friends in Hooper and Fremont, admiring classic cars (he preferred Chevys to Fords), listening to classic rock (he loved Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Jefferson Airplane…just not Jefferson Starship), and rooting for Husker football and volleyball. He was also a tremendous cook and loved grilling and relaxing in the backyard or sunroom, always bringing escargot or some other new treat he made to share at parties, posting recipes online, and sharing gift subscriptions to cooking magazines with friends and family. But Bob had an especially large soft spot in his heart for animals, wild and domesticated, both cats and dogs, and he was always eager to hand out treats, even at the risk of spoiling them. Although many friends were hunters, he didn't personally like the idea, and probably would have started his own animal sanctuary in another life. Bob cared deeply for many fur babies over his lifetime, the most recent of which, Archie, will miss him terribly.

Bob leaves behind many loved ones, including his son, Cory Colhouer of Hooper, and his daughter, Jennifer Shimkus of Biloxi, Misss.; his longtime partner, Vickie Welty of Fremont; daughters, Jennifer Bohn of Fremont and Chris Dozler of Lincoln; his half brother, Jimmy (and wife Flo) Colhouer of Kennett, Mo.; niece, Laura Colhouer of Dallas, Texas; and nephew, John Colhouer of St. Louis, Mo.; his cousins, Alan (and wife Mary) Kamrath of Lincoln and Hugh (and wife Della) Hendrickson of Smith Center, Kan.; grandchildren, Noah and Izabella Shimkus, Ethan and Joshua Dozler, and Tyler Bohn; great-granddaughter, Nora Hawley; and many other friends and relatives. He is preceded in death by his parents, and many fur babies, including Shadow/Boo, Cagney, Lacey, Ashley, Tucker, Sandy, Blue, Buffy, Sasha, Shane, and others.

A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Saturday, September 13, 2025, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Hooper Fire Hall. Food and beverages will be served. Please contact [email protected] with any questions or to share photos and stories of Bob with the family.

Donations in lieu of flowers in his memory may be sent to either FurEver Home, Inc. in Fremont or The Old Poor Farm in Nickerson, Neb.
