Robert W. "Bob" Saeger, 88, of Fremont died Monday, Jan. 5, 2014, at his home.
Bob was born May 11, 1926, in Norfolk to William (a Norfolk dentist) and Agnes (Zutz) Saeger. He attended Norfolk Public Schools until his senior year, when his family moved to Colorado Springs, Colo. He graduated in 1944 from high school there. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Norfolk.
Following graduation from high school, he spent two years in the Army Air Corps in radar and electronics technology, spending part of his time in Germany. Following his discharge from the Army Air Corps, he attended Northeastern Nebraska College in Norfolk and then spent four years at the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine in Chicago.
After graduation in 1951, he set up practice as a podiatrist in North Platte. Bob and Marge Wolfe were married May 31, 1958, in Fremont. While living in North Platte, they were members of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church (LCMS). Bob served the congregation as president of the Lutheran Laymen's League, president of Couriers (a couples club), and was financial secretary and treasurer of the congregation. He served several terms as elder on the board of education and finance committees. He was a member of the Rotary Club, North Platte City Council, the Opportunity Center Board, and the North Platte Library Board. He was a past president of the Nebraska Podiatry Association.
Bob and Marge moved to Fremont on March 15, 2001, and have made many good friends since. Bob was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He called on shut-in members and helped in the office picking up scrip at several business for Trinity Lutheran School.
Several years ago his uncle, Luther Schuessler, a Lutheran pastor in Chicago, wrote a small book. He gave a copy of it to Bob and in it he inscribed, "To a Fine Christian Gentleman."
Bob is survived by: two sons, Nicholas (and wife, Janet) Saeger of Fremont and Anthony (and wife, Lynn) Saeger of Lincoln; six granddaughters, Katie (and husband, Nate) Conrad of Auburn, Emily (and husband, Ryan) Zuch of Las Vegas, Anna Saeger of Lincoln, Elizabeth Saeger of Fremont, Brianna Saeger of Lincoln and Ashlyn Saeger of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren, Levi Paul Conrad and Caleb Henry Conrad; special friend, Barbara Nelson of Fremont; a sister, Jean Jones of Longmont, Colo.; brothers-in-law, Wallace Wolfe of Fremont and Wes Wolfe of Omaha; and sister-in-law, Marilyn Wolfe of Palm Desert, Calif.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie, in May of 2010.
The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Fremont. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. at the church. Burial with military honors by the Fremont Honor Guard (Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 854 and American Legion Post 20) will be in Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church and School.
